Does this unit let you download course data into something like google maps or google earth to produce a course that others can follow (with profiles)?

I think it didn't help that I turned it on indoors, and as soon as it was outside searching for satellites, I was off and riding. It took half the ride, 45 min, before it was back on track. I suspect that if I had turned it on outside, and was stationary for a few minutes, it would've calibrated much quicker. More experimentation required.
I got mine from Johnny Appleseed, who are on St Kilda Rd in Melbourne (St Kilda actually). A bit more expensive than Aussiedeals, but GPS is what they do, so could answer any question I had. And if I have any problems, they're not far away. They also cut me a bit of a deal with map software, which is not for the unit, but is useful for downloading rides onto the computer, and uploading waypoints & courses to the unit.

It was a bit of fiddling, but I've done it.
When I bought the unit, I also bought "MapSource", a map of Australia which links into the training software. Using this, I exported a .gpx file, which Google Earth can read.
I've attempted to attach it to this message...

Can't believe that worked!!
Anyway, the .gpx file seems to be an XML file that contains almost 1000 points, each with the latitude, longitude, elevation and time I was at that point. From this, you could (or what ever software you're using) should be able to work out speed, gradient, etc.
The training software that the unit comes with it doesn't seem to be able to export the course to another format, so you'll need MapSource or some other piece of software to do it. I read somewhere that someone has created some freeware software for this unit. I'm not sure if it focuses on the training aspect or the mapping aspect, but what it does mean is that people are out there writing software for this unit.

I think Johnny Appleseed was asking around $570 AUD but i decided to get it from Geo.Man in america. Around $430 AUD and it arrived exactly 1 week after i bought it - no duty import taxes or anything. It did come with an american plug for the charger however, but as i plug it into the usb cable of the computer it charges from there anyway. The plug is also 100-240V input so all it needs is an adapter (i.e. no transformer required).

So all good.

Scotty,

Go direct from this website: http://geoman.xrayaudio.com/

He is good. Good delivery times. Be aware though that it won't have an ozzie power point on the charger (but will take 240V). You will just have to get a cheap universal (or USA-AUS) plug adapter from a hardware store. Although I haven't actually needed my charger as I have just charged it off USB.

Tell him I sent ya!

Cheers

Joel

Thumbs up Re: Where to buy a Garmin Edge 305

Hi,

I'm the "Geo.Man" you are talking about (thanks Joel!). I noticed traffic from this thread to our site and I just wanted to personally thank all of you and say that we are thrilled to ship to Australia. In fact, we shipped several so far this week and that seems to be the trend.

Most folks are receiving theirs in about 5 days. As mentioned, they come with US power adapters but I've never used mine anyway. I always charge off the USB port of my computer.

Once more, thank you very much for your recognition. If you have ANY questions at all, just let me know.

Best regards,

Geo.Man

geo.man is $us295 + $us17 postage = $us312.

at 0.75 that is $A416.

Not bad.

I'll wait for sub $400.

The freeware is called SportTracks
I just loaded peter's gpx file into it and it worked flawlessly. Very cool!! Street map of Melbourne and his cycle route plus satellite image of the route too. Complicated Is that an escape route

I just tried that too... I'm impressed!

Great satellite images and the street maps are good too.

So was this a trip from home to work?

It finishes just near Swinburne right?

Where did you find the firmware update? Not being able to obtain a coordinate off the unit has stopped me getting one.
Thanks

Yes, from home to work. I work just down the road from Swinburne.

The firmware can be downloaded from the Garmin website, http://www.garmin.com/support/downlo...ls.jsp?id=1243.
You can get the coordinates of your current position, but its a hidden in one of the menus.

For those of you(s) who have one, what's your battery life like?

I've only have mine for a couple of weeks, and I know that lithium-ion batteries take a few charges before they settle, but I'm a little concerned that my 90 minute commute seems to be using almost half the charge. Maybe I shouldn't charge it after every ride? Is the battery monitor accurate?
The manual/website claims 10-12 hours. ATB last year was around 7 hours riding time, which equated to around close to 10 hours elapsed time, that puts me right on the limit.
