OK peckerheads, I need learned instruction from whomever is the designated inhouse battery / RC expert.

Niteflux switch mode charger (7.2V 500mA) karked it. Went to various places of ill-repute to get a replacement charger for the 5 cell (aka 6VDC) pack and ended up getting a 7.5VDC ~500mA reg power supply.

Plugged it in and let it charge for 2 hours. Hmmm - battery quite hot to touch (~50-60C) so discontinue charging and let battery cool its heels. Once cool charge again for an hour or so and the bugger is too hot to touch (ie. >85C) .

FTW?!? (Pardon the really bad 'pun'). Battery obviously getting too many herbs from the new charger thingy from hell, but can I continue to use it or is it going to set fire to the missus' new curtains?

To get nuts on the axle, the ends obviously have to extend beyond the edges of the dropouts, so you'll most likely need a new axle. The thread pitch has then gotta match that of your cones.

Is your hub cones and balls?

You might be able to use some cheap-ass $5 'solid' axle that comes with nuts

MrM suggests you get your multimeter out and check what voltage the charger is really putting out. 0.3V difference between the old charger and the new one isn't enough to cause what you're observing. These power supplies can be quite poorly regulated and consequently put out much more than their rating says.

If you keep charging with the new charger, you could damage your batteries, depending on how hot they can get before giving up the ghost (and it varies with different types of batteries)

As for the curtains - if they're those diabolical frilly flowery things, I say let 'em burn!

I am using this charger from Jaycar to charge an assortment of 4.8V and 6V NiMh batterries including niteflux and vistalite battery sticks

ANSMANN Traveller's Ni-Cd & Ni-MH Battery Pack Charger

works well

All I can tell is that Majura has pine trees type terrain, and Stromlo is a farkin dusty treeless desert. Not sure which is better riding but the dust bowl makes conditions very harsh to ride in.

CX bikes are usually banned from MTB races but yes, if you look at races where CX bikes and MTB have been used together, i.e. CX races or Enduro type events, CX bikes usually win out because they are lighter, thinner tyres roll faster, you can get more aero as they have drops bars and they easier to carry (not such a big deal in MTB races but definitely in CX races where portage 3 times a lap is a possibility). If the course is not at all technical, a CX bike would be my weapon of choice if it was allowed. Too many bumps, tight techy sections and dropoffs and the like and you take a real beating on the rigid CX bike so a MTB would be better.
I might be 16 pages too late but thanks for that climbo. Forgot about farkin. I might check that out.

Ah yes, Airlie Beach - we did a few Hog's Breath Race Weeks out of Airlie before doing Hamilton Island Race Week.

This is us in action on Sydney Harbour.

And this is us at Airlie
