Have any of you guys cycled the Alpine Way from Jindabyne to Khancoban? I've ridden the road bike up from Jindabyne to Dead Horse Gap (which apparantly is the "the sixth highest pass in Australia") but next time I want to take my MTB and ride on to Khancoban. Any ideas on what the road is like past Dead Horse Gap? I'll be doing this in summer so at least snow shouldn't be a problem. I see from Bonzle that it looks like there is about 3 vertical kilometres of climbing involved each way, so Khancoban and back should be a good little ride. ![]() I posted this on another cycling forum a while back but received no replies. Does anyone have any info? |

Theres a map and elevation at http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...e-to-Khancoban . (Click Show-Elevation to get a graph) As far as I know its all bitumen now so a roadie will be fine - an awesome swoop down to Tom Groggin, then some up s and downs (one big climb up past Scammells Spur Lookout) then another great run into Khancoban. |

Right about the hills. My son and I toured from Beechworth to Goulburn via the snowies in April. We passed two cars on the first climb from Tom Groggin with cooked auto transmissions. Hard riding but great camping and scenery. The shop at Khancoban is okay for a feed but don't rely on it's stock for touring supplies. |

Wow! Finding this thread took me back! I rode the Alpine Pass as a teenager back in (I think) '82.....Wasn't sealed then. Me and a friend rode out of Albury along the Alpine Pass, stopped in at Mt Kosciusco then down to Cann River and back to Bairnsdale. Blazing hot, under-prepared and had $0, but had a great time. I always intended to, but I never really toured very far after that.... I recently bought a Surly LHT so hoping to change that very soon. Thanks for the memories! |
