It would probably be easier to tell you what not to get. Anyway, the first thing that you want to get is a fitting done by a reputable LBS. Once that is out of the way and you know what size bike you need, start looking for the best bike that fits you that is in your price range. If you can afford brand new, buy from your favorite LBS. If they don't have a certain bike in your size in stock, they can get one for you. Don't buy one that is a little larger or little smaller just because they have it in stock. If you encounter this sales pitch, run to another bike shop.

A lot of guys here are going to suggest that you purchase their favorite brand of bike. Your best bet is to try all of the brands that you can before you make your decision. There are a lot of great components out there. Just remember that the top of the line components, i.e. Shimano Dura Ace, Campy Record, and SRAM Red are mostly just a little lighter than the components one or even two steps down. Right now, Shimano Ultegra or even Shimano 105 will give you service as good as Dura Ace, but will be slightly heavier. I'm sure the same is true of Campy and SRAM components.

The main thing that you need to keep in mind is that a bike is not fast, the rider makes the bike fast. Make sure that you train....train.....train!!!!! You can have the lightest, most up-to-date bike, but it will not go any faster than you can make it go, so you have find a training program that will enable you reach your peak fitness level and you have to learn racing fundamentals. If you can afford one, hire a coach. If that is beyond your reach, join a cycling club that has racers in it and learn from them. Lastly, the best way to learn is by doing, so when you feel ready, get into some novice races to get your feet wet. Don't expect to win your first time out, but gain all the experience you can. Cycling is like any other sport. It takes some God given talent and a lot of hard work!

I am very thankful for your help and advice kdelong. I'm 23 years old 5'6 153 pounds and I'm in great physical shape right now. I know I want to race road bikes. I am currently looking at a Trek 1.5 right now and also a Specialized Allez double. My plans are to get a somewhat entry level racing bike, yet something I can grow into as I acquire more experience and skills. As far as training goes, I'm planning on training between 5-6 days a week, with the goal of competitive racing in about a year and a half from now. Once again, thank you for your help!
