Default New bike- road vs hydrid..help!!! low budget

Hi. I am new to this bike world.. I just moved to a decent countryside and was looking to buy a bike to commute to my work which is like 7 miles from home.
I prety much ride on road (which is why i choose to buy a road bike), but i also want to ride off-road (like in forests without proper roads or some off-road paths) weekends.. Now I am stuck with either road or hybrid.. Also my budget adds to this issue.. I am a recent graduate and so my budget is £250 max. Also me being tall (6'2), ths choices might be less. So far I have come across two bikes that fits my budget:

hybrid ex-display and so low price with some scratches)
Fuji Absolute DX 2007 Ex Display : Bikes | Mountain Bikes | Road Bikes| Winstanleys

or

Evans Cycles | Raleigh Airlite 100 2009 Road Bike | Online Bike Shop

Please help me find my first decent bike

thanks...

How about a used road bike from the '80s? It will probabaly have 36 spokes and enough room for the smaller hybrid size tires like 700X32 or 700X35 (or 27X1-3/8!)

Well, don't get a racing bike. Other than that, road or hybrid depends on what you prefer. There are some "road bikes" that are suited for some moderate, non-gonzo off-road stretches, but they don't really come cheap, because the market likes pretend racing bikes.

I just switched from a hybrid-type to a road bike - I'd say if you're primarily doing road/commuting type stuff, get a road bike. My personal experience was that "wanting to go off-road etc" rarely translates into ACTUALLY going off road.

Also in my experience, decent used mt bikes are easier to find than decent used road bikes. In other words, get the roadie now, save up and get the mt bike later.

Between the two, I would buy the FUJI ABSOLUTE ... in part, because the large (21") frame size is probably right for someone your height ... AND, they are trying to liquidate it for less than the normal end-of-season price ... £100 is real money if you are on a tight budget.
