Hello. My name is Tim. I live in Kansas City, Missouri. I am 39 years old and finally feel like doing something to get into shape. I am 225 lbs. at 6'1". I have noticed that motorcycle riding hasn't helped me drop any weight so I guess I'll have to pedal now ![]() I have had bikes in the past but I just went out today and bought a Giant Yukon MTB and put on road tires for the present time. I also have a Schwinn S.30 which I picked up used from a friend several years ago. It is now loaned to another friend so I thought I'd start fresh with a new bike. Just joined the group today and look forward to learning all I need to know about this sport. See you all in the posts. Tim |

Hi, I'm Sharon and I live in Boulder, Colorado. Married to a serious biker who has successfully gotten me hooked as well. We love to ride up into the mountains in the summer where even if you're having a lousy day, the view is hard to beat. Boulder is a great place to road bike. I have a number of "epic" rides planned for this summer. The summer is short so we need to squeeze in as much fun as we can! I ride a sweet little Salsa Campeon that I just adore. It's amazing what a well-fitted bicycle can do for your attitude and comfort. |

Hi, Mark here, Mark2bikes (well 3 actually) - you can never have too many! Living in N. Wales, UK. Frequently in Perth W. Australia for work as well so have just bought a bike there also (giant crx2). pretty good riding (relaxed) over there on paths - WITH SUNSHINE! Due there again next week for 3 weeks - with the whole family this time. Here I have to contend with cars but at least get to ride some good mountains and don't have to slow down at every junction so rides tend to be much faster. Another Giant TCR here which I set up for TTs but they stopped doing them near me so it's for sale. Also a very comfortable Reynolds 853 (?) frame, I set up for long rides mostly in summer as we get over 2m of rain here - moslty on my house! Both here use Campag of course. What I don't do - carry a gun on rides - MAD OR WHAT!? Will post a question in the techy bit now as the crx2 hsn't come out over here yet - I don't think |

“A Journey Across the Nation to Meet Needs Across the World” Dear Fellow Cyclists, This April and May I am joining RideforWorldHealth (R4WH) on an exciting journey across the U.S. Our goal is to fight Global Health Inequities by increasing awareness. All along our 3,700-mile ride we will be giving lectures as to how we as Americans can prevent unnecessary human suffering worldwide. In order to get our message out we will be stopping at hospitals, schools, city halls, and everywhere in between. In addition, our organization has chosen two beneficiaries who provide critical care for the underserved, both in the U.S. and overseas. The Global Health Access Program (GHAP) and the Pendulum Project are renowned for their extraordinary work on various health problems in the developing world. For decades they have been mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS on children living in sub-Saharan Africa and providing primary health care services to the poor of Southeast Asia. Without fundraising events from groups such as R4WH, these organizations would not be able to directly save and improve the quality of life of those they serve. I am writing to ask that you join R4WH and myself, so that we can achieve a “victory for humanity.” Together, we can work to assure adequate primary healthcare services are available and accessible to all people, no matter where they live. Accomplishing such goals requires that we make new friends and find new sponsors. Not everybody has the time or energy to ride a bike across the country, but we can all respond to this challenge set before us. Please consider an online donation at www.rideforworldhealth.org/donate or donate by writing a check directly to “Ride for World Health” and forward it to (P.O. Box 8234 Columbus Ohio, 43201). Please reference my name when donating, as each rider is asked to raise a certain amount for our beneficiaries. Last year in our inaugural year, with small donations from individuals such as you, we were able to raise over $100,000 for Partners in Health (http://www.pih.org). This year we would like to make an even bigger impact. Thank you for your support. Respectfully, Mark Pedri Passionate Public Health Professional and Medical Student markpedri@yahoo.com or 410-878-6454 P.S. To learn more about our wonderful beneficiaries, please visit the Global Health Access Program (www.ghap.org) and the Pendulum Project (www.pendulumproject.org). If you are unable to help us reach our ambitious goal of providing quality health care for those who need it the most, please forward this letter to others whom you think may be more able to at the moment. Remember, no donation is too small. Pennies save lives. Thank you for your time. |

Hello, I live in (extreme southwest) Virginia, I work in a grocery store. I loved riding bikes as a kid and am rediscovering that enthusiasm again. I'm mostly a Sunday driver (literally, I've been biking about 16 miles on Sunday mornings, while the automobile traffic is light). I recently purchased a Windsor Stratford on ebay, trying to (affordably) get a taste of the modern road-bike experience (lighter weight, toe clamps, skinny tires). Before the Stratford I've owned mostly "department store" bikes (my first bike, early 70's, was a Western Flyer). I still have a mid-80's (35 lbs and rusting) Huffy Dash 10-speed that I use when I am going to face "cyclocross" terrain, and am (for no good reason) repairing a "new" Huffy mountain-bike (I bought for $75 on ebay) and replacing its wide, knobby tires with more road-friendly ones. I'm trying to keep things simple and not turn a relaxing hobby into a self-loathing-producing money-pit (something I've experience as a home-recording hobbyist). I don't have the desire to trade-up to a more expensive bike (although I would like to add a used Schwinn 10/12 speed to my bike lot as my perfect hybrid). I've concluded that I can enjoy riding a humble bike as long as it is tuned up fairly well, fits me properly, and is suited to the terrain at hand. I do have maintaince questions that you all can probably easily answer (from "how tight to tighten a one piece crank" to "what is the normal maintainance proceedures for sealed hubs and sealed bottom brackets"). (I've made purchaces from, and have tried communicating with the owner of the closest bike shop, an hour's drive away, but with mixed results). I will find the proper areas in the forum to ask specific questions in the future. All I can offer in return is my rudimentary enthusiasm for bikes and bike riding. |

Hello, I currently live in Okinawa, Japan and am new, not just to this forum, but also to Japan. Have been riding multi-speed bikes for about 45 years and currently have close to a 100,000 miles on one of my bikes in particular--the one I brought with me--my yellow, 1977 Mercian Vincitore (100% Campy Super Record parts, and some ancient Italian made Clement Campionato del Mondo Seta tires). I'm retired and follow my wife around the world to various assignments and so have time to get out and ride from time to time. Am presently recovering (still!) from a serious cycling accident and hope to start competing in Time Trials next year. I'm interested in cycling theory, training and parts design, and have helped more than a few manufacturers with redesigns of their equipment. Have also worked as a trainer and consultant for various professional cyclists and triathletes, designed their bikes and maintained them as their "mechanic", and worked with various other pro athletes, including a World Champion, Ironman World Champion, two winners of the RAAM, Senior US Mens Champion, California State Pursuit Champion and numerous others. My specialty is precision balancing of bicycle wheels to eliminate all vibrations at any speed. I also designed the ceramic hybrid sealed bearings that are used in some of the worlds lightest bicycle wheels. That's it, looks like a good forum. |

Howdy! This is my first post here ! I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.I'm 41 and haven't ridden a bike since my mid-twenties! I'm looking to get back into shape and do some casual riding, nothing too serious or competitive. I have an old 10 speed racer (late 70s) which was my dad's then became my ride. I'm not sure whether or not to get a new(er) bike or mod this one. The streets are brutal for my aluminum skinnies and forget about any offroad excursions on this thing! ![]() Thanks, Aldo |
