And I disagree that cars and bike rides do mix.... they can co-exist very well... What I do think is that moronic drivers and cars don't mix. |

I believe cars and bikes do mix, but NOT on an interstate! Riding bikes on a 4 lane highway is stupid. And cops should know that They should have planned a safer route.. I don't know about their location, but riding bicycles on interstate highways is illegal in most states. Riding bikes at 15-25mph while cars who are obeying the speed limit at around 65mph is asking for trouble. It isn't always posted but most highways have MINIMUM speed limits at well. Usually about 45mph. I think the one who planned the route should have been charged with negligence. |

Cars & Bikes do mix.... but Cars & BIKE RIDES don't most of the time! Look at the accidents that tend to occur at the Tour de France when the camera crews crash into the riders. Granted it doesn't happen all the time but it is still too risky to be so close to each other. Weeks of racing could be lost on a single crash! Just too risky for me. But then again, a fan spraying pepper spray into the Peleton is jacked up too! Maybe it's just me but alot of the drivers here in Vegas are so impatient that it makes my rides at night very scary. They can be rude and inconsiderate. Do alot of you have some frightening rides where you live? and at what time of day do you usually ride?

Unfortunately, it's just a numbers game: the more cars that pass you per unit time, the greater your chance of getting hit. Drivers are drunk and/or stoned, too old to see well or react, distracted (cell phone, radio, ipod, TV(!), etc.), blinded by the sun, having a stroke or cardiac event, or even intentionally trying to swipe you. My optometrist told me that he sees people in his practice all the time whose vision is severely impaired and who still have their driver's license. For that reason, he refuses to ride his bike anywhere on the road. |

"The group was pedaling south on the four-lane highway..." When was the last time you were driving 60+ mph and saw a bicycle on the interstate going 17mph? When was the last time you saw a car driving 17mph on the highway? Just a few weeks ago a state trooper in my area hit a parked car in the breakdown lane on an interstate and was killed. The highway is no place for slow moving vehicles. People who breakdown on the highway are advised to get out of their car and wait a safe distance away from their car. Pedestrians, bicycles and horses are banned on multilane highways in my area. And it should have been against the law there as well. NO exceptions. As for the "blocking vehicle", when traveling at speed 65mph a driver only has 3 seconds before they reach something 100 yards away. Now was that "blocking vehicle" completely in the breakdown lane? or was it partially in one of the travel lanes? In any case the highway is no place to be riding a bike. And if they weren't on the highway it wouldn't have happened. |
