I live in Madison NJ and I couldn't be more pleased. Miles of rolling hills, with safety lanes. A typical 16 mile ride from here has about 300-500 feet of ascent/descent. I mapped out a ride yesterday of about 25 miles that would have 1500 feet of climbing. There is not too much traffic mid-morning or mid-afternoon. I have ridden through the past 5 winters with very little time off taken for ice and snow. If I lived in an area like South Jersey I would get a bike carrier for my car and find a less congested place. There are still plenty of places there that are not automobile congested. |

try this link for some ideas: http://www.njbikemap.com/njmap/link_...uth_jersey.htm another trick is to participate in a club event ride and save the cue sheet (the spray paint marks stay on the route for some time too) i'm still working on a good loop in the harrison twp./south harrison twp. area that has some fair hills. rt. 77(start by park by post office) goes for miles and has wide shoulders although traffic varies. i see alot of folks on tuckahoe rd. in franklin twp. and it has nice, smooth and wide shoulders as well. i often ride these to the halfway point of my target mileage and then turn around. if you want to get away from cars, the state woods off rt 47. has a few miles of hard dirt roads in glassboro/clayton. monroe twp. has an 8 mile paved bike path by the police station. where the hell do you ride in westville and not get run over? |

Right now my main ride is up Hessian to Grove and down Grove into Riverwinds...I ride the path all the way around riverwinds and back out and return home. I did use that link you gave and found a lighthouse marked on the Woodbury map.. I wanted to check it out so I rode the same route but instead of going into riverwinds I continued to Crown Point rd and turned right until I went over the little draw bridge and got to N Commerce way... if you follow this road straight to the river you will come to a neat little lighthouse, but they built up industrial area and oil plants so you cant even see the lighthouse from the river anymore nor the river from the lighthouse... Those are two nice rides.. the roads are busy but they have good size shoulders and when you ride first thing on weekends there is not a whole lot of traffic... I do want to find some nice circular routes with long lonely roads... I wish we had as much open space as some places I have seen.

Amazing how the same sentence can read two or sometimes even more than two ways....I am actually laughing out loud because it could really mean that....

Yeah, nothing like looking at other people's pictures on the scenery they see while biking that I realize that Jersey doesn't really have much in that area. I am in central Jersey and new in the cycling world. I look forward to enjoying more cycling time and always on the lookout for new paths (besides the ones I use to the tennis courts/supermarket) |

Im in Jersey City and need to drive out north or west for better, safer cycling. I could just go to the local area parks and ride around in circles, but who wants to do that. Way too much traffic and not enough bike paths in the north NJ/NY metro area.

I hate it when people who live in NJ show no love for their own state. Yes i know the traffic sucks and the beaches aren't the greatest, but dammit they are OUR beaches and i'm damn proud of where i'm from. Has anyone here lived in Jersey City ? Then you all know the dangers of even trying to ride in that $hithole. Call it what you want. Armpit of America, nuclear wasteland, or even toxic wasteland. You got to admit though. Where else can you get the BEST boardwalk in the summertime, the BEST casino this side of the Central timezone , the BEST Six Flags, the BEST urbal legend spots, the BESY turnpike, and the BEST place to get your car stolen ?? Only in NJ, baby ! |

Westville is within riding distance of Breakneck Road, by clearview highschool. Probably a 15-20 mile ride. Breakneck Road is a great road to do hill work, when you compare it to how flat most of South Jersey is. I believe I also told you about the Peddler Shop rides in a previous thread, well they're done for the winter since no one wants to ride in the cold weather, but you should come out in the springtime for them. |
