Its interesting that there seems to be a general feeling here that you should eat breakfast (or at least eat within 3 hrs of riding) - I'll dig out the information I have regarding this if you're interested.
Interesting, for rides of more than 100 km I usually have a rather sizeable breakfast (usually coffee, muesli, yoghurt and maybe some toast with jam). I do not carry food but usually stop about halfway for a snack (cappuccino with sugar and a pastry of some sort) and I do fine with this.

For longer than 100km I usually pack small sandwiches and/or fruit - ham and cheese, jam, honey, whatever. And/or bananas and apple slices.

My biggest problem is being physically able to chew/swallow the food whilst riding - I generally ride at a level where I'm breathing pretty hard. I'm usually dry in the mouth and sucking air.

Tried museli bars but nearly choke to death on them. Hate those $$ "sport" bars. Bananas are the easiest food to eat, but boring after a couple. Jam sandwiches wrappped in foil are the current experiment, but again I find them tough to chew/swallow when breathing hard. Made some small muffins which were o.k.

Any good "real" snacks you can readily "inhale"?!

Cam

p.s. Generally 2-3hr rides, but working towards 200+ km ride in a few months

I tend to slow down when I eat so I don't choke on the food. My latest experiment was a strange sandwich that a friend had at work. It was peanut butter, honey, and blue berries. Not blue berry jam or preserves but actual blue berries stuck into the the peanut butter like bearings stuck in grease. I cut it into quarters and wrap them in paper napkins. It is a good one handed snack, and I have a napkin to wipe the mouth and the hands. I try to keep the napkins and dispose of them properly, but if inadvertenly gets away, it is ad least biodegradeable.

I originally tried this with wheat bread but it was too dry, so now I use regular white bread.

I like carrying an apple or two in my bag for when my blood sugars get low.
