Cycling Music

Hi everybody, what kind of music do you listen to when cycling (or just in general)? When I'm looking for a real work out I usually listen to something that's upbeat, or nothing at all, but when I'm on more of a relaxing ride I generally listen to either blues or country. Lately I've been listening to One Flew South's debut album, The Last of the Good Guys on my more relaxing rides and it has been great. They are creating a pretty big buzz and are one of few artists that my whole family actually enjoys listening to. If you haven't heard of them you should definitely check them out.

I think you're mental if you ride your bike on the road and have ear phones on. Hearing is an important aid to determine what's going on around you.

When I'm on the trainer, I listen to rock music - ACDC mostly, but you can probably guess some of the others.

Given how great moderation is around here, there is probably no need to disguise the spam...

...but shouldn't we appreciate the effort to sneak it in?

I rate it a 3 for content but an 8 for slyly attempting to fit in - about a 6 overall on the spam scale. Ideally she'd be pimping pills for "natural male enhancement" to get a higher score.

Country music kills brain cells....I listen to mellow zen type music like 5 Finger Death Punch, Cradle of Filth, Disturbed, Linkin Park, The Urge, Circus of Dead Squirels, Type O Negative, and kick it old school with Dead Kennedys, PIL, and Sex Pistols.

And I'm selling beach front property in Missouri....all over Missouri. And if you buy more than 10 acres, I'll throw in some unnatural male enhancement, and a crack whore.

You sound like someone who should hear Celtic Frost's Monotheist. Soothing.

That is soothing music for me. Actually it gets the adrenaline pumping, with a little rage thrown in, and I can ride hard and fast.....of course if someone cuts me off, I pound them into the asphalt...that's the rage part. I use the same music for myself and my kids before we play hockey. Still can't figure out why we live in the penalty box.

I find metal is good for hill work. For me, the genre of the music matters less than a nice tempo to help keep my cadence up.

I find the best music to accompany a ride is actually the sounds of country western singers trapped in burning buildings.

yeah I was kinda wondering the same thing. I have this image of me getting hit from behind and not even having a clue due to my itunes.

It is a contentious topic. Some people swear that they are aware of their surroundings even when they are listening to their iPod or whatever. Personally, I don't listen to music when riding.

Not to be contentious, but exactly how much warning do you have sans earbuds when some knobshine hits you from behind at 35 mph?

Then again, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm probably a hypocrite, because when I am riding by myself, I'll listen to tunes; when I have my daughter in the trailer, no ******* way do I have the earbuds in.

How often is someone trying to hit you from behind at 35 mph though? IMO, it is ok to listen to tunes as long as you are aware of your surroundings. MTB-ers especially ***** about how some take up the entire space in the trail, and don't hear others when they come up from behind and desire to pass because they are blasting tunes into their ears.

That's my main worry - I can see a little over 180 degrees plus I keep my head on a swivel, so that means I've got left, right, and forward covered. What disconcerts me is a car hitting me from behind - and on that, you wouldn't have any warning and going without headphones would give you what, maybe a half-second warning, if that?
I agree. I'm a roadie/commuter guy, so I don't really have to worry about being an inadvertent trail hog.
