The north part of SLO County is colder in winter and warmer in summer than the more moderate city of San Luis Obispo 25 miles to the south or than the coast, a similar distance away. Huge temperature swings from day to night are typical in all seasons, which is great. Daytime highs in the middle of winter are generally 50 to 60 with nightime lows at 20 to 30, rarely in the teens. We only get about 14 inches of rain in a year, with dry years sometimes 9 inches or wet years maybe twice normal. At the moment (10:20 am) it is 60 degrees, no wind, clear, forecast high today is 67, and I am dying to get away from my desk and go ride this afternoon. Oh, I better keep drawing so I can leave early and do that. |

I rode 12 miles after work today. Inspired by my posting of a day or so ago, I did something I have never done since I started riding a road bike in 1986--I took a camera along. Horrible pace today, but it was fun. Attached are several of the photos taken today on a loop from home. |

Nice pics. It must truly suck having to ride there. I have theory that it's safest to cycle in places like Gary, Indiana because their stark lack of scenery allows a rider to pay more attention to the road. How far are you from biggish climbs/mountains?

We do not have any true mountains anywhere close, as the highest elevations on roads I ride often is about 1790 ft above sea level. There are some moderately difficult and difficult climbs around though. Those would be like 2.5 miles at 7 percent, or 7 miles at 5 percent, or 1.5 mile at 8 percent average with sections at 15 percent. |

I just finished a 35 mile loop beginning and ending at my home, including one of my very favorite roads, Highway 229 out of Creston, CA to Hwy 58 into Santa Margarita, CA where I enjoyed a coffee stop at mile 19. It was a clear, crisp day, 62 degrees when I finished. These rural "highways" are two lane roads with striping in the middle some of the time, usually with light traffic. 229 is windy going up and twisty, fun down the other side. Awesome ride. |

I didn't take my camera today, and my cell phone is not the picture taking type. Hwy 229 is part of the Wildflower Century out of Creston that our club SLOBC puts on in late April every year, with about 2500 entrants. There may be some pictures of the area at www.slobc.org . It is a good website. The club also runs the Lighthouse Century in late September over on the coast. Both are tremendous, well-organized and fully-supported rides. |

Here is a link to Google Map with Satellite Imagery turned on, zoomed in on a portion of Hwy 229 south of Creston. The two white circles at top center of the zoom window are the two water tanks at the top of the climb (moderate, not tough) and the fun twisty descent is below that in the view. Here's a pic from my cell phone from my ride last week, this is about 5 kms from home on a disused bridge that is now part of a bike path, glorious dawn looking west across the Manukau Harbour. |

Went for a decent 10 miler today here in Virginia Beach. Not very scenic. Lots of traffic, but since it was my first time riding that particular stretch I stayed on the Bike Lane as opposed to the road itself. It was my first time riding the road bike since getting home for deployment as I have been spending most time on the trails with the mountain bike. The weather was great. Low 60's with a stiff breeze and load of leaves, twigs and pine needles all over the Bike Lane compliments of last week's Nor'easter. ![]() I did realize one important thing. I have gotten VERY out of shape since getting home from deployment. |

Last ride was a 45km ride along the Perth to Bunbury highway ( all bike path ) was a pleasant ride except for a moment of lost concentration which saw my front wheel edge off the path onto the soft sand and in turn sent me crashing to the ground......would have been quite funny to watch, gives me a greater apreciation of wearing a helmut as itn ow has quite a few scrapes on it.....pitty my shoulder wasn't as protected!! Lookin forward to another ride tomorrow ( Must pay more attention ) |

I am also in the market for a new saddle since the one that came on my bike (San marco ponza) isn't the greatest of platforms.
