I use Bit Defender, it doesn't bog down my PC like some others do and so far has worked very well.

I ran the Malwarebytes last night and it found something called Hkey Hijacker. I don't know exactly what it was, but it sounded nasty and Malwarebytes rebooted my PC after it removed it.

Some malware has components that start up automatically when the PC starts and embed themselves into Windows components, so with those malware programs you need to reboot in order to fully get rid of them.

I've been using Avast, from Alwil Software, for years now, free version. Foolishly downloaded and installed McAfee because it was free from Comcast. Got rid of it as soon as I discovered how buggy and slow it is.

They have ID Theft Protection, Root Kit Protection, and a High Security Firewall on their pay versions.

I also use Spybot Search and Destroy. You can visit www.kimkommando.com for many more free security software options. With all the good free stuff out there, why pay for anti-virus protection?
+1 on the AVG Free. Works great.

Was using Kaspersky for years. Went to AVAST this year. I can tell that Avast is much better- because it's free. Can save money for one good tyre each year .

I might have gone a bit over the top, but after browsing through the free software available on the sites you all mentioned I ended up with:

ZoneAlarm - firewall

AVG Free - real time antivirus checker

Malwarebytes - manual antivirus checker

Glary Utilities - PC optimizer, does everything but disk defrag

Smart Defrag - This is a nice disk defrag tool that has a cool auto defrag option.
Windows has a defrag tool, but it always says the disks don't
need defrag run. Smart Defrag took a couple of hours to do a
deep optimization the first time and only takes about 10 minutes
or less now.

If you're on a LAN with a network firewall, then you might not need a software firewall. I'm on a LAN and I just use the Windows Firewall for supplementary protection. My Netgear firewall router is pretty air-tight.

Really? You still have a dial up connection? 28 or 56k? Does your computer make use of vacuum tubes?

Wow - I take it you can't get any type of high-speed connections in your area?

My internet connection is through cable, shared via a LAN behind a network firewall.

My average connect speed is about 45k, but I type and read really slow so that's fast enough for me. I keep my PC on the floor and those vacuum tubes keep my feet toasty warm in the winter.

We have all of the normal DSL, cable, broad band, etc services available to us, I just don't see the need to pay for it when 95% of our internet usage at home is for leisure activities. I really don't care that it takes 1 minute to download all of the email I get each day on dial up, rather than 3 seconds.

We both have PC's in our offices that are on company WAN's, and those aren't supposed to be used for personal business, but sometimes we do use them when we need to move something large.
