Default Aluminum bikes

Unless you're a professional bike rider I can't see the sense in paying $5,000 for a bike. I'm going to buy a new bike for $750. It's aluminum and I think it would be a good choice, because it's 27 gears. I've been using nothing but 10 speeds and I can't imagine how much faster I'll be able to go. I'm going to buy a 27 speed Schwinn super sport road bike. Does anyone else have any experience with this bike they could share?

If you're looking for a budget bike, check out bikesdirect.com. They have fairly cheap bikes, but the quality seems good. My brother, room mate, 2 friends, and myself all have BD bikes, and love 'em. Guy at the bike shop guessed that I paid $1500 for my bike, and was suprised when I told him it was $500 shipped.

On the down side, you have to put it together, or pay someone else to do it. I'm a bit of a DIY guy, so I enjoyed the assembly.

As for the Schwinn you're asking about, I don't have any experience with it, but two of my friends have the entry level schwinns. The 27 speeds won't make you faster than a 10 speed, nessicarily. I have a 27 speed, but rarely use more than maybe 8 or 9 gears. And my top gear is probably the same as yours, I just have more options in between.

In biking, as with other things, you get what you pay for. That said, I agree with you on not spending $$$$ for a bike if you're just a recreational rider. Just get something you're happy with and that will keep you on the road.
