Default More road races die: Greg Mathieu does nothing

So more road races have been killed, this time in Quebec just about the only place in Canada left to have any road races. They are so few remaining international road races in Canada it is joke.

01.13.09 - CCA Announces Cancellation Of Uci (sic) Elite Women’s Races For 2010

Due to the retirement of the event organizer, the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) has determined it must announce the cancellation of three UCI sanctioned races for Elite women for 2010. The cancelled events are: Montréal Women’s World Cup (May 29th, 2010), the Tour de Grand Montréal (May 31st – June 3rd, 2010) and the Tour de PEI (June 6th-10th, 2010).

What has Greg Mathieu, a former wrestler with no cycling experience and the new Canadian Cycling Association CEO done?

Nothing.

We have no new teams, no new sponsors (no big surprise there at the Wrestling Association for more than a decade he had no sponsors there either), and fewer races.

The sport of competitve cycling in Canada is in freefall. It really isn't Matheiu's fault he should never have been hire in the first place just like Lafreniere, Lacelle and Sebragno before him, all without a shred of cycling experience giong into the sport's governing body. We have non-cyclist running the sport as they have been for over 5 years now.

Again no surprise.Very few people with any professional cycling experience are involved in any meaningful way.

The CCA is one of the few sports organization in the world to hire people with absolutely no experience in the sport to run it. You mght as well put a baseball coach in charge of figure skating it makes just as much sense as putting wrestler in charge of cycling.

Ridiculous!!!

Mathieu will proably last another year and bail out as have the three previous directors of the CCA.

The board of directors will then hire another person with ZERO cycling experience to continue to sink the sport.

More than a decade will be lost to stupidity.

I really wonder how guys like Steve Bauer, Jacques Landry and Eric Van den Eynde work for a guy who knows nothing about the sport but is left in charge? It has to be frustrating....

Why dont you send your best talent to Australia in your winters to compete and train in the offseason? I am often blown away by the disrespect shown by North American countries regarding road cycling in the southern hemisphere in your offseason.

We regularly embarrass you on the international stage in all aspects and facets of road and track cycling, have some of the oldest heritage in these sports and some of the oldest, toughest races in the world.

Yet you would rather sit on a trainer in your basements 3 feet under snow rather than getting on a plane.

Weak Canada. weak.

I think in general North Americans 'overplay' the concept of an 'offseason' in cycling.

Good points.

Canada is used to seeing Ausie and Kiwis during its summer, John Harris, Graeme Miller et al.

Don't expect anything but weakness from Canada for now, the Canadian sport has inexperienced bureaucrats and guys who know nothing about it trying to run it.
