Hello All. I need some help in choosing the ideal commuter for handling the streets of Chicago. My commute is 3-4 days at about 28 miles round trip each day. I travel on heavily congested streets with the usual hazards of potholes and debris. My main bike right now is a Specialized Sequoia Expert but I need to purchase a 2nd bike soon as the daily commute is taking it's toll on my road bike. My needs are: 1. a strong/durable but light bike that will allow decent speed (15-17mph avg.) 2. Shimano 105 3. < 38C width 700c tires (for speed) 4. Ability to add fenders, rack, lights etc. 5. Can live with either dropped bar or upright position as I have ridden both. I am leaning towards a Cyclocross bike but I'm not sold on spending the $1200 (would like to spend $600 to $800) or so on the Cannondale. Any other good Cyclocross out there to consider. Here are the bikes I am considering: 1. Giant Cypress SX 2. Specialized Sirrus line 3. Cannondale Cyclocross 4. Specialized Globe 5. Jamis Coda Elite Thanks for any feedback. frico |

I'm looking at doing much the same thing you are--have you looked into a Specialized Globe City? They come in 3.1, 6.1, and 7.1 models with the 3.1 being the top of the line. The 7.1 is around $550 and comes already outfitted with light, rear rack, fenders, and chain guard. I'm not as bike savvy as you and was wondering what you thought of that model. |
