It rarely gets cold enough around here for tights. In recent years I have developed sensitivity in my tows and palms, but tights won't help with that... there is only one place where such clothes are required: Mt. Hermon in the north during winter. And maybe the Negev mountains in the south when riding on winter nights.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but, do you carry an Uzi while riding? Judging solely from the news (a poor source to be sure) it seems that the security in Israel is really strained. I'd love to visit, and ride, there. Assuming my misconceptions of security are overstated, how is the riding? Roads? Traffic? Terrain?

First - being a pacifist myself I do not carry any weapon, and it is not required unless you travel in Gaza or the west bank which I don't. But the sad part is the traffic, which is extremely dangerous. Road cyclers are considered suicidal! But there are more remote roads with less traffic and great views, and if you go off road you have lots of even more great places to see. Bottom line - I recommend cycling with locals, so that you won't get into any trouble of any kind.

summer year round here guys, it's Australia!. (where i live anyway ) but on a serious note, summer has poked its head out a little early which is common anyway, but as i speak, wev'e had three days of torrential spring rain 3 months late and now the entire east coast in experiencing flood conditions. go figure.

I only reckon its warm in sydney cos I've lived in the tropics and if you don't feel the cold when you return, then its not that cold is it. does that make any sense???

I've had a hard time finding tights that fit--I'm tall and thin, with a 36" inseam. Anyone know of a good brand for taller guys? In the meantime, I'll be wearing my knee warmers.

I'm in the same situation. Bike Nashbar (bikenashbar.com) makes tights that come long sizes. I'm 36 inseam, 33 waist, and the medium-long have worked fine for me, in both the bib and non-bib variety. I prefer the bib, you might want to try one and see how well it works for you. They are not terribly expensive.

The most cost-effective option for me would be to buy some warm tights minus chamois (Pearl Izumi AmFIB or similar) to wear over my bib shorts. I could also use these tights for cross training - running and XC skiing. Butt I'm wondering (sorry ), does this option work well or do the tights spend the majority of ones' ride sliding down ones' bum? What's everyone else do?
I live in Indiana. Use three types: Lycra for breezy days in the 50s; RAGE Gear cotton/lycra(?) combination is terrific for 35 to 50 deg. days; for really cold days(which I don't go out in much anymore) I have a 17 year old Performance Polypro. Have even worn two at same time on New Years Day rides. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered two pairs.

I just got some great Pearl Izumi tights that "cut the wind" and they are fabulous. They have like a thin layer of fleece on the inside. SOOOOO Warm.

I just tried a pair of tights this year. They felt so good that it seemed almost wrong to wear them.

12 panel w/chamois $50.00 at performance.

Okay, per all of the advice here (thanks everyone!), I finally purchased some Pearl Izumi ThermaFleece "flash" tights. Wore them last night - temps were in the low 40s - and they were great. I wore them over my Microsensor bibs and they didn't slip much, if at all - something I was a bit worried about. Anyway, they were very warm (but not too warm) and comfortable. The only thing that sucks about PI stuff is the price, but I suppose you get what you pay for...

On a side note - if anyone is looking for a warm glove option, I purchased Performance's new Stretch Fleece Gloves as a liner for my PI Gel Lite's and they were great at cutting wind/cold. On sale right now for $9.99 in stores - a bit higher (for some reason) on the web site.

I'm low-tech - I just stick a pair of tracksuit bottoms over my normal cycling shorts.

Fire up the Internet and check out Road Runners, EMS and REI catalogs. I've found some excellent cycling-type gear in catalogs designed for runners and climbers.
