Default does this price sound right?

I'm a broke college student trying to buy a road bike. I found a used 2003 Trek 1000 online for $395. Does this sound like a good deal? I don't know alot about bikes, since i am just getting into cycling. I greatly appreciate any input.

I have a 2003 Trek 1000 and I paid $550 brand new. It depends on what condition the bike is in and how much it costs to ship.

IMO, I would be very skeptical of paying that much, especially without being able to see it firsthand. A quick google search seems to indicate that most new 2004 leftover stock T1000s seem to be reduced to the $460 to $485 price range if you shop around.

Buying a used bike online is risky, even for someone who knows a lot about bikes. Shopping and test-riding at local bike shops would be my recommendation.

Make sure the salesman takes time fitting you to the bike; fit is important. If you're not sure about the size frame you need, try to test ride a couple of different sizes and see which one feels most comfortable and secure. Take your time and don't buy the first bike you ride; shopping around and test-riding is a great way to learn.
