Well, I went and did a ridiculous mistake. I guess that's how I learn. Earlier today I was assemling my bike which arrived from Florida. My front tire wouldn't fill up with air*, so I couldn't finish assembly without heading to my LBS. I had left pedals for last in the assembly line. Stupid me forgot to tighten it with a wrench. I walked the bike to the LBS where the tire was inflated, and even there I didn't remember to tighten the pedals. I went out and did three hours of riding (including potholed landscapes.) In all the bumps and pedaling, I managed to eat out my crank's railing with a steel pedal on an aluminum crank. So now I need a new crank :\ My previous model was a Suntour XC Comp. Ebay substitutes run for $55, this is for a model that's several years old. I'd rather pay $80ish for a newer one. My frame is a Cannondale ST 1000 I intend on using the 20% off deal from nashbar (which expires may 23rd.) I'd like for it to have 50+ teeth on the biggest crank. I need something durable nashbar's crankset list http://www.nashbar.com/results.cfm?s...ice1&pagename= *my pump wasn't long enough to reach the nozzle ----------- All I really need is the bototm one of these two (the ebay auction is at $55 starting bid) http://i13.ebayimg.com/02/i/04/1a/bc/27_1_b.JPG

Dude...when you break a crank...it's always a good idea to just go get a new set. No reason to risk getting hurt if it happens again. You should check out eBay and see if there is anything you can find for cheap. Tailwinds, Vector7 Quote:

But couldn't he just use some 1000lb epoxy and chemically weld the ped bolts to the cranks? Use the cranks til they're dead, then replace BB/cranks/Peds in a few years or so. Seems awful wasteful to trash brand new rings. And the epoxy is more then strong enough to be safe. |

To solve the problem, I bought a used Sugino 170mm crank arm with two cogs (one is 53, the other I'm not sure.) I also had to buy a $15 170mm left crank arm (no name) because my surviving left crank arm was 175mm. I'm gonna try to re-thread my old crank as a side project later on. I also bought a spare tube. Total cost was $20 for the right crank arm, and $36 for the left arm and installation of both arms(this was done at two different shops)

I used the same crank (with the same pedal) for about a year with no problems. I used the same crank with Superbe Pro pedals prior to that and the helicoil gave me no problems. I dont think it couldve been anything else.
