Default Experience with FSA Gossamer MegaExo

Has anyone had any experience with FSA Gossamer MegaExo crankset? I was looking at it and they appear to be reasonably priced for an outboard bearing bb crank. Are they as stiff as DA or Ultegra 9 cranks or am I better saving up for an DA or Ultegra Hollowtech crankset? Any experiences?

Thanks.

Thinking of getting the same crankset! Cannot find much about it on the net, experience wise?

My experience is limited, as I'm not a bike geek simply because I'm not rich, or crazy enough to do so. I only own two bikes.

Mine came stock with Avanti Giro 2007. Done about 1000km, still feel as new.

Sorry, that's all I can share, can't tell you the difference in 'feeling' in comparing.

It runs smooth for me. Perhaps a better way to put it that it works for me. Hope it works for you too!

I have a set of the compact Gossamers in MegaExo and have had no problem with them in 3000 miles, except I need to add some greases to the bearings (which I thought was very easy). I will probably upgrade to Phil Wood bearings, which are installed for free if you buy them at Competitive Cyclist.
Here is a link to a pro who uses them:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2007/tour07/tech/probike.php?id=/tech/2007/probikes/tour_cancellara_csc_cervelo[/url]

and the mechanics quote:

For the mostly flat Stage 4, Cancellara augmented his frame's aerodynamics with a particularly deep-section Zipp 808 carbon wheelset. At nearly 1.9m (6' 3") tall, 80kg (176lb), however, and with a power output rivaling most nuclear fission reactors, Cancellara naturally runs his choice in componentry a bit on the safe side when it comes to just about everything else. As with many professional riders, Cancellara prefers the added security of an aluminum handlebar and stem. Surprisingly, however, he also foregoes the de rigueur carbon fiber crankset for FSA's decidedly mid-level (and substantially heavier) Gossamer model.

According to Team CSC mechanic Alejandro Torralbo, Cancellara began using the Gossamer cranks during the Spring classics, but grew more comfortable on them than carbon ones because he feels that they're stiffer. We have our doubts as to whether or not a bench test would support that statement, but with the raise of a brow and wry grin, Torralbo explained in simpler terms: "He's a strong man."

Take it for what it's worth?

Cranks, like most things, are a pretty unrewarding "upgrade". Go for looks if you must change.

- I have 105 (10 sp) on one bike.

- and I also have DAce on another.

- big difference in front shifting between the two cranks. The DAce crank/BB is smoother than my 105.

- have no idea about this Gossa-thing.

Hi,

I had a compact FSA Gossamer MegaExo on my last bike. I was happy with it until the crank bolt came loose and made a right mess. FSA said I should have tightened it before every ride (yeah right) but they were very good and replaced the parts that were damaged. They also said I should get some lock thread to prevent re-occurance.

This was a while back, not sure if it is still the case but I read a few reviews that said it was a design flaw (not counter threaded?). Not sure about that.
It was fine with the thread lock but I decided to upgrade as a cheap DA hollow tech came my way. Which is very nice and no problems encountered.

Don't let me put you off the FSA though.
