I have some Bontrager Race wheels with about 4,000km on them. I recently noticed the rear hub is quite noisy and the bearing somewhat rough when freewheeling. While it’s not a big deal, bearings being bearings they’re unlikely to improve if I leave them. I was wondering if anyone has any experience in re-building Bontrager freehub bodies, in particular replacing the bearings within, and how difficult this is? The Bontrager site unfortunately doesn’t cover the freehub body at all. |

Thanks Dave, yeah I saw that one too but unfortunately it doesn't really say much about what's going on inside the hub, though probably similar to the Shimano hub they describe above it. Decided not to get too concerned about it until I have solved the problems with my Polar Power sensor (thus far having taken up more time than I care to admit to). Cheers |

Same problem here...and I am hoping someone out there might be able to provide a little more insight with a couple years passing since this was originally posted. My rear hub comes from a 2006 Madone 5.2, with about 6000 miles. Anyone with a good exploded view of this hub? One other frustration with this wheel - it's slightly larger than a standard 700 (+3/8" diameter) and impossible to mount any tire with Kevlar (even using tire irons to get it ON). For those considering purchasing any bike with Bontrager wheels - check them out first. My bike - Trek 2300 - 41000+ miles, never mechanical issue. This Trek, my last because of the Bontrager - proprietary equipment - stick with all Shimano or Campy. |
