Hybrids: Giant vs. Trek

Hey guys!

I've been riding a mountain bike from Toys R Us for about four years now, and well... I suppose it's time for a new bike. I've been researching bikes online and I've determined a hybrid is the right type of bike for me. My local bike shop only sells Giant and Trek bikes and I've narrowed my choices down to either a Trek 7200 or a Giant Cypress. I was just wondering if you guys could give me the pros and cons to each of these models as well as other differences between the two bikes. Thanks a lot!!!!

Which style of 'Cypress'? They make 4 models I believe - ST, LX, SX, DS.

Whoops! I guess there are 6 models:
1. Cypress ST = entry level steel frame
2. Cypress = entry level aluminum frame
3. Cypress DX, LX, SX= each respectively better components
4. Cypress DS = Duel Suspension.

The plain ol' Cypress is a good bike to build on - but I would definitely have my LBS upgrade the derailleurs to at least Shimano 105's.
The bike comes stock with 'Toys R Us' derailleurs

Crisp shifting is a non-negotiable

I'll look into getting better derailleurs. The shifting on my bike is horrible and it's such a pain. Does the Trek 7200 have better parts?

Nope... it uses Acera derails as well.

As a matter of fact, the two have almost mirror component groups.... BTW, what are your shifters now? Are they grip shifts, or do you push a lever with your thumb and pull a lever with your finger?

My shifters are the ones where you push a lever with your thumb and pull a dever with your finger, although, I don't really have a preferance. My bike just seems to shifty things are way out of wack, though. For example, the shifter will say it's on gear 5, but it'll be on seven and making this terrible clicking noise. Sheesh, it's such a pain.

Well if you don't have a preference (and make sure you DON'T) you can keep the stock SRAM grip shifts of either the Cypress or 7200.

Personally, I hate grippers.

Seem to remember I've seen ezifire on some/all of the 2004 Giant cross models (vague recollection!) . But anyway with the colour and spec of some of the 2004 bikes i've already sold plus the better exchange rate , I'd hold out for the new model.

I have a nice 2000 cannondale silk path 700 thats better then both for $450 bucks i'll sell ya.
