Default Will 7spd cassette fit on a 8/9 hub?

I am thinking about buying a used wheelset, but the rear hub accepts an 8/9 shimano cassette. I have a 7 spd shimano cassette on my bike right now. Can I make this work? Also, if I decide to switch to an 8/9 cassette, what else will I have to upgrade? Thanks in advance.

Chances are 99% that your 7 speed cassette will fit on the 8/9 hub.
"Assuming" that it's a road bike, you can click here for a similar thread.

You'll need to change the entire drivetrain and shifters on your bike to make the wheelset work. You should do it!

No.

To make it fit take it to a good shop where they may be able to slap a spacer on it and adjust your derailleur.

Yeah, I figured out that Nashbar has a spacer to allow a 7spd cassette to be used on an 8spd hub. I may go that route. Thanks.

The spacer you need is 4.5mm in width most LBS should carry them I stock many. And yes your 7 speed cassette will work on a 8 speed hub.
