Yes that auckland chip seal is a *****. It slows you down a significant amount.

I'm quite satisfied with my Conti Gatorskins thus far, for a training tyre they're fairly light. I'm using them on my commute and haven't had any punctures since the stupid pinch flat I had a couple of months back.

My wet weather commute bike has WTB Caminos. They're slightly heavier than the Gatorskins, have ok rolling resistance, but the grip is rather mediocre.

Quite a lot of places on the North Shore now. Basically most of the quite residential suburbs that are unlikely to see big volumes of traffic.

Luckily my fav route East Coast Road and Devonport are still predominantly tar seal.

Some less common but very impressive tyres are handmade by an Italian firm called Challenge

Check out some of the range, especially the highly recommended Challenge Criterium SE - it feels very fast and is one of the most responsive tyres I have used.

Tufo are worth a look too

I'm jinxed this year. 4th flat of the year this morning. Last year I got my first flat in July and had 6 for the year, average 2000k per flat.

sogood gave me some 25mm tyres to put on my commuter which is currently dead, I'm currently 81kg so I might try one of the 25mm on the back of the OCR to see the difference. I think 25mm should have about 10psi less pressure than 23mm, so same front and back ?

Has anyone used those Tufo's ? They are a strange one, tubular that fits on a clincher rim.

Nearly brought Clement tyres last year. Clement was a major french brand upto sometime in the 50's before disappearing, I beleive that Clement tyres are made by Vittoria nowadays. But its just pose value for me cos Clement is my surname.

I wondered if older tyres are more prone to flats, simply due to the fact that there's less thickness to penetrate before reaching the tube?

Hope those 25mm tyres would work out well for you. Of course, that's in exchange for that excellent book written by that cycling God. Thanks!

Absolutely, thats why a lot replace their rear after 2000k.

I've heard for motorcyles that 80% of flats happen in the last 20% of the life of the tyre. Would suppect something like that for bike tyres too.
