I just purchased a 2006 Specialized Roubaix Comp that comes with a set of Alex ALX 298R wheels. I have read that the first thing that owners of this bike would do is upgrade these wheels. I have a chance to buy a set of new Bontrager Race Lites for $200.00 and was wondering if it is worth it. I do train for triathlons if that matters. Thank you for your opinions. |

I picked up a nice set of new Bontrager Race Lites awhile back on eBay and I love them. IMHO they far outclass the Alex wheel set that came stock on the bike, however the stock wheelset was probably the least quality Alex wheels out there. Anyway, after the switch I have found that I enjoy riding much more and have even found it in me to train harder. Sorry but I cannot compare them to Alex ALX 298R because I have never ridden these. |

I have a 2006 Specialized Roubaix Elite that also came with the 298Rs. I rode them for about 2000 miles before a spoke broke during a century. The wheels did not seem too bad to me because I did not have much of a frame of reference having only ridden one other bike. The Roubaix was a major step up and felt awesome from the first pedal stroke so I was not even thinking of the wheelset. But I did upgrade to Neuvation M28s which are pretty much indestrucible and roll well. So I guess my feedback would be that you don't need to ditch the wheels right away. They are not completely useless. Take your time and find a good wheelset as the 298Rs will be fine for a little while. |
