Default Need to Thread a Truvativ Crank arm

I bought a truvativ crankset on ebay. After installation, I comes to find out that the drive side arm is not tapped to accept the pedal. Can I tap this myself? I have the skill, but I'm not sure of the alu. Can it be tapped? I don't really want to go through the hassle of putting the old crank back together if this can be fixed.

As far as being lied to... well, that is now in the hands of ebay and paypal

thanks

If you have a tap of the right size and pitch and the skill to do it, then tapping aluminium is easy. Use kerosene as a lubricant.

Sounds a bit odd that the crank arm wasn't tapped.

Tapping aluminium is straightforward. Quarter turn in, half of that back to clear the debris, use a cutting fluid and possibly a drill press (turned by hand) to get it started so that you don't misalign. The trick is to remember that one side has thread running one way and the other the reverse, although I can't remember at present which side is which.

If your LBS has a workshop properly kitted out for repairs, it might be better to take it there rather than fork out for a specialist tap if it happens to be the reverse thread side.
I too find it bizarre that it was not threaded at all. Sounds like a factory second to me. Hope you have some luck with it thru Paypal / eBay.

You'd think i'd have thought of that solution first- five minutes, five bucks- done. It was the drive side, so that is a standard tap, not the reverse thread. I agree, it must be a f.s. that 'snuck out of the barn'
