The steerer was aluminum. The fork with carbon legs came from another line of trek bikes (touring line or something) with more relaxed geometry (for comfort maybe). The aluminum steerer was prep by shot peening the metal which rearranges the molecules in order to strengthen it (how ironic). It broke just below the stem.
