Default Trouble with inner tubes on Schwinn World 27

Hello,

I've been trying to get my old Schwinn World 12-spd back on the road. The tires are ok, but the tubes dry rotted several years ago. My brother bought new tubes with the intent of riding it awhile back, but never got around to it and gave the tubes to me. Not sure where he got them, but WalMart might be a good assumption. The boxes they came in were labeled 27 inch.

I got the old tubes out and the new ones in and on the bike. While putting them on, it looked like they might be bunching up a bit in one spot, but I thought that would go away once they were fully inflated.

That must not be the case, cause the ride has a bump in it once per revolution of each wheel. Feels unsteady, and makes me think the tubes are still bunched up.

Back when I got the bike, the Schwinn dealer said that the rims were designed for Schwinn tires. Not sure whether that's truthful or not. Could something like that apply to the tubes? The front wheel is original, and the back is a replacement due to damage from just before I parked the bike. The tires are labeled 27 x 1 1/4.

Thank you,
-Bill

Try some Conti "Tour 28 All" tubes.

Turns out I hadn't been careful to evenly push the tube up into the tire before mounting. It has been a long time since the last time I did this.

Thank you,
-Bill

Good luck with your Schwinn 12. I have one as well. My only mod was to add a Velocity cassette style rear wheel although I just trashed the original Suntour derailleur on a half century by striking something.

Yeah, mine still has its original Shimano front and rear derailleur, and the index shifting seems allright. I used to ride that bike everywhere, including off-road before we knew any better. That's why it had to have its front wheel trued and the back wheel replaced before it was parked years ago.

It nearly got away a couple of times, but I've resolved not to let that happen again.

Good luck,
-Bill

Look at Nashbar.com if you want a 27" wheel with a cassette-style hub.
