Default My 06 Carbon Record BB died at 4500 miles?

Normal? Or unusual wear? I have been having a clicking issue and a little bit of play in my crank on and off so I pulled out the BB tonight. Low and behold the center part moves around on the spindle and rattles. Seems a little soon for a Campy part to wear out no?

This is square taper? If so yeah that is way too soon... if the 2007 U/T I understand they had some problems initially... they had to replace them once just to get through the tour of California!

I second Wilmar's opinion. If it is a square taper then it is definitely waaay too little time. Either improper installation or a defective piece of some sort.

Do not know enough to comment on the UTs.

crank bolt wasn't torqued enough. Happens a lot. If it was assembled by your LBS, they should at least replace it at cost. BTW, is it on an Italian frame and the matching cranks? The cranks is kind of serious but if it were a Japanes frame, check for other problems at areas of contact between the frame and the campagnolo parts.

If you are not using campagnolo cranks, there is a difference between JIS and ISO square tapers.

<<<crank bolt wasn't torqued enough>>>????

I think from the description this is a bearing issue & related to the bottom bracket not the cranks.
As mentioned before the square taper sealed unit is less inclined to fail due to poor instalation like external bb's but more likely water entered the bearings somehow or they just plain failed. Replace it with a Chorus or Miche model.

If there is play in the arm with the centre part, which I'll assume is the interface between BB and crank, it is usually a product of the crank bolt not being torqued enough. Especially with lighter parts, as I have seen with a Tune sixpack TI bb and bigfoot crankarms. The owner rode home one-footed to avoid stripping the BB and crankarms (expensive).

Well guys I'm feeling a little stupid at this point. I went by the LBS and showed them the BB and they say it is totally fine. To me, it seems the center section that is Carbon on the Record version has more play in it that I remeber. I installed it, regreased, tightened her up and all was perfect on todays ride? I'll have to see if it gets loosed on me again over the next few weeks. The bearings spin perfectly and there seems to be no wear at all in/around the square of the crank arms? I appreciate all the input.

Make sure it is torqued on to the spindle at or close to recommended torque (or just really tight. 40N+ is alot of torque for a small-ish bolt), otherwise you will have problems.
