wisdom of home threadless headset installation on CF fork/alum frame Never having installed a threadless headset (or, for that matter, any headset on a bike other than an old bike messenger mongrel), I am now faced with a conundrum: skulk into the LBS with my new (horrors: mail order) snazz Itai frame w/ new (yes, mail order...gasp...headset) and ask for a pro installation job (along with an appropriate dose of professional opprobrium), or see whether one can simply smack on crown races on a < 500 gm carbon-fibre fork using a vacuum-cleaner tube the way we all used to do it with heavy-duty steel forks back in the day. The frame is a 7005 alum debernardi, and fork is all CF (as far as I can tell, including the crown) . Anyone out there have thoughts on this embarrassing matter? Headsets are by far the scariest part of a bike, almost a mechanical lymph node... |
