Default Wheel Suggestions for Trek 1000

I still have the stock rims on my Trek 1000 and have read countless times one of your first bike part upgrades should be wheels. Any suggestions on some good/reasonably priced wheels that add performance and some bling for my bike?

How about some more information:
1. What is your price point?
2. What is your use for the bike (race, recreational, etc)?
3. What is your fitness level(ideal weight, amount of training)?
The good thing about wheel upgrades is that they are easily transferrable to a future bike. You may be able to increase performance due to training harder and getting to an deal weight.

Mind you the wheels on the Trek 1000 are actually quite good for an entry level bike. If you want a decent training wheel, wear out the exisiting Alex 450 and then get a Mavic Open Pro.
