There is something wrong about it. The thought of it is weird. I agree with Steelem.
I have this mental picture of opening the UPS box, finding a pair of slightly used ASSOS bib shorts carefully packaged with skid marks on the pad.

I beg to differ here.

A good pair of bibs may cost anywhere between A$200-A$400. At 50% off for a lightly used pair, that's a saving of $100-200.

A pair of good quality daks OTOH, is somewhere between $5 - $10 new. A cheap pair maybe $2. So that being the case, there's little economic reason to be thrifty about underwear unless you're really struggling for cash.

Hypothetically, if I was trying really hard to save, then I'd consider buying used daks if it meant that I could save a significant amount of money. With such a low unit cost like that, any such saving is likely to be insignificant.

And besides, when was the last time you saw somebody selling used underwear? There's no market for it because:
a) people don't buy it, and
b) people don't get enough of a return out of it to justify trying to sell it.

Rationally, there's a no good economic reason to not buy a used pair of bibs. And if you clean it, wash it, and disinfect it (if you must), then I can't think of a rational hygienic reason to not wear them.

What's holding you guys against it is an irrational (and dare I say it, juvenile) fear of something having brushed up against somebody else's goolies.

And if that's important to you, then keep buying new - there's nothing stopping you.

+1. If it bothers you, don't buy them. If it doesn't bother you, buy them if you want them. Its as simple as that . It bothers me so I don't buy them!

Pretty much. I know our washer has a sanitary cycle on it, so I guess iffin' a person was so inclined they could run their new used bibs through said cycle. Not me, though.

I have sold three pairs of used shorts (Pearl Izumi crap) on eBay, and I was amazed how much people paid for 'em.

eBay IS a great place to get new Assos stuff at a lower price.

I grew up on clothes from a Salvation Army thrift shop. Mom simply could not afford to clothe 3 boys with new things.

But that all stopped in my teens when I started working and buying my own clothes.

This isn't a sanitary debate. Wash the clothes and wear away. It's a money issue. If you have the money then wearing used clothes will seem beneath you. No money and the problem eases.

All that said; even mom bought new underwear for us. I don't want to know how poor you have to be to require that.

So come out from behind the sofa, where I assume you keep all your second-hand acquisitions from ebay and reveal all. Tyson

Its just plain nasty. If you can afford a new road bike, you can afford new riding panties.

This is not a Tshirt or a tie we are talking about. This is a thin slice of material that spends its ENTIRE life rubbing up against a sweaty choad and balloon knot. 153 washes with the strongest detergent known to man will not change that.

As I said earlier, I don't buy used bibs, but just to put things in perspective, think on this: next time yer in the hospital or a loved one, friend, victim, or dominatrix is there, consider all the "juices" that have been soaked through those gowns. Such things will make wearing used bibs seem like running your tongue over the finest Swiss chocolate.

I know people who buy 'used' cycle clothing off eBay and from what I see:

1) It is stuff bought by someone intending to get back into cycling, blowing an absolute fortune on gear, going out for one ride, scaring themselves silly and putting it all up on eBay.

2) Tea-leaves who've pilfered stuff off the display racks in their LBS and are shifting it using eBay.

3) Tea-leaves who've raided some poor unfortunates cycle locker and are shifting it using eBay.

4) Ex-display items that've been tried on by hundreds of folks, but never really used.

5) Antique cycling gear.

6) Fakes.

Gowns and theatre linen are laundered (washed) then subjected to sterilization. Usually at a central sterilization dept. via a large porous load autoclave and moist steam at 134-137 degC. I doubt Lycra etc would stand up to it.

even if it did I still wouldn't buy them
