See the link i furnished earlier. There's plenty more info available using google.

Basically, scandium adds strength to aluminum, aids in the shaping and cold working of aluminum and it reduces grain crystalization at the welds. It also yields a finer grain structure which generally (all things being equal) results in less cracking along grain boundaries.

Therefore, it aids in tube shaping. Aids in welding. Allows a thinner, lighter tube (less mass) to be used for the same resulting strength or a same gauge tube that is stronger.

Yes. I agree. It's next to worthless.

I forgot to add, I believe Dedacciai "U2" tubing is a sc-al alloy.

Dedcciai source: http://www.hydro.com/en/Press-room/N...king-the-lead/

Columbus' sc-al tubing is simply called "Columbus Scandium". Pegoretti uses it.

The reason it's been nicknamed Scam-dium is because it is rare and expensive, so some manufacturers have been guilty of using far less than is necessary to see the most benefit.

That said, I have no data whatsoever on the various tubesets, how much Sc they contain, or the relative benefit.

If I was in the market for a new frame, I would definitely research and consider a Scandium alloyed aluminum frame.

There's good info in the Easton pdf file on manufacturing with SC7000 tubing:

I believe there are also structural alloys that are primarily scandium, so I would not assume offhand that it is just an aluminum alloy with a bit of scandium.

Not that you can't bike without it.

Just had a look at the spot price for Scandium. $5000 US per kilo. Yeah, I guess some might go for a bike frame made primarily of it, but why? At that price you could get a really well made Titanium frame.

You misunderstood, threaded, a 'scandium' frame means they might use 6% scandium instead of just 3% in the alloy. It is still a primarily aluminium frame (at least from what I've read).

Yes, I understood that, it was the comment on a primarily Scandium frame. I know most 'Scandium frames' don't really have enough Scandium in them to make any real difference. Makes for good marketing blow though.

How do they make a 3% or even 6% Scandium frame? I thought the master alloys only went to 2%?

it was a hypothetical point.
