Question Cycle Chain Rusting.

My cycle chain seems to be rusting at the joints. Is this normal ? Does it need to be replaced ? Thanks.

Vijay

Hi Vijay. Just clean it and lube it. You should wipe it along with the rest of your bike, and relube it if it gets wet during a ride. You don't necessarily need to replace it unless it is worn. To check this, measure a length of 12 links. You can do this with the chain on the bike. On an unworn chain, 12 links will measure exactly 12 inches or 305 mm. If it measures 12-1/8 inches (308mm) or more, then the chain is worn and needs to be replaced.

Surface rust really doesn't matter on a chain and I wouldn't worry about it. If it bothers you then the next time you replace it buy one made of a stainless steel.

I have never had a chain rust, even on my ****ty wet whether bike. If you clean it and use a quality chain lube (I use tri flow) there should always be a thin film of oil left on it this will prevent the rust.
If I don't have time to clean the chain then I relube it atleast once a fortnight to once a month, but then I am only a weekend warrior.
