Since you didn't say otherwise, I'm still guessing that you don't have the pedals mounted on your cranks, yet, and are trying to insert the cleats by pushing the shoe against the pedal manually ... is THAT right?
Ive tryed putting the shoe on to the M525 without it being on the pedal.

I had a few goes and thought yeh.. this isn't the right cleat for it.

The other SPD M520 are on the bike and clips in fine.
