Oh......so you think today's frames are faster, better? Please explain. Real scientific reasoning would be nice.

Ya know, generally, I've never understood the whole idea that one frame can be faster than another (apart from some 'aeroness' or huge weight differences on long, steep hills), simply coz there are no moving parts (apart from the headset)! It's just sittin' there, doing nothin' but holding everything in place. After I smash young carbon-propped-up punk on one of my $200 aluminium 'dumpster' frames, I sometime articulate this point to them.

That can't be right. I've heard that some frames actually leap uphill like horny billy goats with the scent of brenda goats in their nostrils. I'm pretty sure that a phrase similar to that is used in at least every other Bicycle Magazine bike review.

I regularly ride a 1985 Eddy Merckx Columbus SL frame and a 2007 Look 565 carbon. Sprinting out of the saddle my top speed is identical on both, I only have one set of wheels that I do sprint workouts on... my climbing speeds are also within 1 kph of one another. Climbing out of the saddle the Look feels lighter, but that doesnt seem to lower my times over the Eddy...

This place seems to sell them. But apparently there's only 99 of the bikes made; you'd have to act fast to get one, I suppose... The price is not completely insane, but still in the range of "my wife would kill me", for a toy of that sort

Yeah; I wonder how long it will take them to get rid of the pest regardless of his maneuvers. My guess is he'll just push his shopping cart over to the next public library, and try again from there...

It's gonna be a new bike for you, that's it. Will it ride better? That depends on how much you notice the difference in ride quality. I'm a big fan of subtle differences and can feel differences in all my bike. None of them are better than another, but some I like to ride more, and some are more suited to certain riding conditions so when faced with that, they get to go on a ride.. So....if ya want something new, by all means go out there and help the economy. It's good for everybody and new (at least to you) can be good. You can buy used and it's still new to you.

What real world benefit am I likely to see from moving up to something like a Madone 6.5, Felt Z15, Orbea Orca or similar? Move my average speed from 19.5 to 20.5? Little difference on flats but big difference on climbs (where I often go off the back today)? Very little real difference other than better shifting?

Footnote: I reckon racing on the slowest-feeling bike is not the sort of thing you want messing with your mind when you're having a bad day and red-lining.

Eggzachary. The one palpable benefit to a new bike is the psychological one, the kick in the pants.
I feel the same way about women, although my wife doesn't exactly agree.

Oh yea, oops, I think we covered that. As a bloke once barked at me when I laughed at a guy in a race who was frantically scoffing some chocolate 1km from the finish, thinking it was gunna give him an advantage: "mate, ya can't underestimated the placebo effect." Funnily enough, the guy who stuffed the chocolate in his gob finished closer to the front than I did
