I've been using Zero's for the last 25K miles over 5 years. I lube the pedals every 2K miles with a mini grease gun, but rarely have lubed the cleats at all since they just don't seem to need anything. However, checking the tech instructions on the website, speedplay indeed recommends lubing the cleats with a dry lube every one or two rides. This seems excessive to me, but suppose it couldn't hurt. Lube every 100-200 miles ought to be plenty. Dry lube may reduce wear on pedal and cleats, although that hasn't been an issue for me either....just ready for the second-replacement cleats now. Looks like I need to buy some dry lube with my replacement cleats. To answer your question, I'd apply the lube only to the part of the cleats that contact the pedal. As an alternate, seems spraying the pedals would work just as well, but maybe messier. I've seen a buddy squirt chain lube all over his pedals after lubing the chain....now that's messy. |

The dry lube is to keep the spring free and unbound. Any excess friction between the spring and the rest of the cleat will just be added wear to the spring and one step closer to the spring breaking. Lubing the spring also makes clipping in a tad easier.

Thanks for the advice...I think the speedplay's are great. |
