You definately need triples around Darling Harbour to climb over all the prams and strollers etc wheeled about by the unthinking non-cycling mortals who clutter up the place. If not prams then the sunbathing tourists. ![]() Contrary to popular belief it does get cold (ish) here. My first year in Sydney was spent at Condell Park and it snowed one winter morning. I'm now in the Eastwood area and winter riding is often around 5-7 degrees around 6am. Nothing like the cold elsewhere in Oz though. |

One word of caution. If you change gear on a triple and there's some maladjustment, the chain can wind round the crank, jam, pull your rear derailier right out of line and have you off the bike. Triples are terrific for alpine work but I basically now adopt caution when I change crank. Something like that happened to David Millar but I don't think he was on a triple. I can tell you it's a dangerous and costly experience as a yank on the derailier can knock the gears way off. After my experience, I slow right down when shifting the cogs and make sure the chain feeds on smoothly. Triples are fine but definitely a touch more complex. Even so, I still prefer triples so long as I'm careful to keep them lined up. Quote:

I did drop the chain off the inside a couple of times when I first got the bike. Wasn't used to having the little ring, and popped the shift into granny at too high a speed for my cadence to match up. Now, it's not a problem. |

I have a triple and its not that bad, extra weight, sure, but its something to fall back on. I have never used it before though, I stay on the Medium and/or Large ring, its ridicolous how some people boast about being able to take a 15% grade on the big ring, they are the ones who get knee problems.

I just switched over to a compact double crankset. I can switch out the cranks in about 10 minutes from compact to standard ultegra. This seems to be the best of both worlds. My original intention was to use the compact in the hilly areas where I ride in the summer, but I have found very little compromise in using it daily. This season will give me a chance to evaluate the use of the compact on a daily basis. Hockey |

I ride an FSA Carbon Team Triple. I really think that triples were invented for a good reason and that they are here to stay. Call it a grannie ring or whatever, if you don't want to use it, don't.
