i've got a ttt zepp xl stem & handlebar w/ a 31.8mm clamp. i'm looking to get a longer stem and can get a good deal on a deda newton OS stem with a 31.7mm clamp. is this 0.1mm difference anything to be concerned about? won't work? fatigue the metal faster? it's really a consipiracy and both are 31.75mm? thanks for your advice! |

0.1mm difference will make no difference! (I had the exact same situation with a Deda Magic and 3t bar last spring, and it's working fine). I would guess you could take 10 stems from all the manufactures and find a variance in sizing by .1mm on 1 or 2 from each batch. Personally I think it's a marketing ploy by Deda forcing you into thinking you MUST use their bar as well in order to get the proper and safe set-up/fit...

Having seen road stems on moutain bikes ( yes that worried me too ) and used mtb stems on road bars I can´t see that it´s more than a con but there is one stem made of magnesium where the manufacture does read the riot act about using a torque wrench to mount , stress risers and other scary stuff ( found it , ITM´s The Stem , all 95 grams of it ) . If in doubt you could use a section from a coke can as a shim , often done to fit a straight mtb bar to a road bike but in that case you may need to use two .

speedplay gave the same coke can tip for making a shim between their cleat (when in 4-bolt config) and a carbon soled shoe. "we sell official shims, but i suggest drinking a can of coke and cutting it with an x-acto knife" not sure about the x-acto knife cutting the can, but i've got a Ginsu in a drawer somewhere! |
