Default Road bike recommendation

Hello all. I am looking to purchase a road bike in the $500 - $650 range. The best deal I have found so far is an '03 KHS Flite 500 with tiagra components, Reynolds steel frame, carbon fork, Neuvation wheels, etc. for $599. The Trek 1000 is also available for ~$520, but with Sora components, aluminum frame, and alloy fork. I am leaning towards the KHS but am unsure of the quality of their frames etc. never having owned one. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks for all your comments.

KHS has been around along time.Better bang for the buck than Trek, and the 9 speed stuff and CF fork is more than worth the difference.

IMO, definitely go for the KHS steel / 9spd... you'll be much happier in 6months, 1 year, and 2 years from now. Good luck and enjoy the ride!!

Thanks for your input Germanboxer. It seems like the KHS is the better deal, but I haven't seen the weld quality, attention to detail, etc for KHS. Does anyone have any experience with their bikes?

My girlfriend bought a KHS on my recomendation about three years ago. It was the best deal I could find for the money. The result is she rides much more than she used to and still loves the bike. No problems other then the usual maintance. She did upgrad the wheels after a couple of years but I think that was due to damage rather than bad wheels.
