A lot depends on your fitness, but i'd say that at zone 4 and below you want long continuous efforts and 5 and above need to be shortish.

The zone 4 work, should be between 15 and 30 minutes of continuous effort, by one to four repeats (depending on fitness, the duration, and your goals are).

at zone 5 to 6 i find 4-mins a good duration to aim for. The recovery as 2lap suggested can be quite a while. However, you should aim for the interval to be at least 3-mins, to stimulate VO2 max.
