Lightbulb Wanted * Lactate Specialist Please *

Hi

Here is a simple one for a Lactate specialist.

How does the Lactate curve evolve, during continuous efforts at steady paces.

Lower L4
Mid L4
Higher L4

Does the curve grow and then remains steady?
Or does it grow more at first, then steady, then continues to grow?

Thanks a lot

I'm far from a lactate specialist, but:

I think that maximal lactate stead state (mlss) is usually around 30 mp, which is smack in the high end of l4.

Functional threshold power is essentially equal to critical power is essentially equal to maximal lactate steady state power. Thus, at the low end of level 4 blood lactate levels would initially (i.e., in the first 5-10 min) rise, but would then either simply level off or would tend to fall back toward (but not all the way to) the resting level. At mid level 4, blood lactate will rise and then tend to plateau (although there may be some upward or downward drift depending on precisely what you mean by "mid level 4" and on the exact relationship of your functional threshold power to your maximal lactate steady state power). Finally, at upper level 4 blood lactate concentration will tend to increase steadily throughout exercise.

Now a question for you: why do you want to know?

That's what I was wondering. Maybe he just likes taking lots of samples.

SE, I think you may find the most interesting things happening above and below L4 since like Andy mentioned, things tend to stabilize in the L4 area. Perhaps you want to examine lactate levels in the region of L4 carefully to discern some differences among interval lengths in that region?

It also came up in the 2x20 thread, as a case for continuous efforts at FT rather than breaking them up into intervals.

I am trying to update my knowledges of physiological reasons for fatigue. Trying to find the way through that abondance of incomplete information that send readers in different directions.

I would love to see a chart, with all the curves on it. Performance itself, lactate curve, ventillatory & hr threshold, everything. But I may have to build it myself, as I have been googleling it for a while now, with no success.

From what I understand, lactate curve is not necessarly a good indicator fatigue. Say a 90minutes time trial. How would you anticipate lactate curve to look, on a chart. Isn't it slowly, very slowly going up? At least as a result of plasma loss due to dehydration? Or in an attempt at performing negative splits? Eh well, let's stick to constant power, after all, even splits aren't that bad neither.

I only have Canadian Funds, and marijuana. Our dollar is not as good as yours, but our pot is better, and legal too

It has been decriminalized I think. That means that if you get caught with small quantity, you get a ticket, but no criminal record.

I think the only reason why it is not 100% legal (and probably never will), are the impact on healt, in general.

By the way, how do you think smoking pot impact on cycling performances?

Of course, inhaling any contaminants isn't going to help in athletics. I'm not a stoner (or much of one) but I don't think consensual crimes should have such harsh penalties as they do in the States.

I was alive when the hippies were all around and except for Charlie Manson and crew they were a pretty harmless bunch. I can't say the same for the street gangs today though. Quite a different group of people.

Let's say for example that I go to Amsterdam and partake of the particular freedoms that are available. I haven't broken any laws in Amsterdam or the U.S. However, when I get back if I have a drug test I will lose my job, even though I've done nothing illegal. Heaven forbid I have sex outside of marriage!

Didn't Andy say that smoking pot before a big climb helps open up the lungs?
