As a coach, I ask all athletes under my care to record, time, distance, cadence (average), and HR. because not all can afford the HR monitor that records time spent in zones I ask each rider to training within certain zones for specific time periods. So a concise diary should have all of the above info. However, ALL EXTRANEOUS CRAP ASIDE, Time is more essential than distance . I even go to the extent of telling my athletes that I don't care if their speedometer doesn't work, as long as the cadence and timer are working on the computer I'm happy. |

I used to train by hours, but now I train by miles and speed. When you are training for a 45 mile road race that takes under 2 hours to complete, training for 2-3 hours make not increase my fitness enough to finish. Races are measure by distance not time. Over the winter I work to increase my endurance to 150% of the distance I intend to race at the next year. If you can ride 60 miles in training, you can finish a 40 mi road race. After I have increased my endurance, I start working on speed early in the spring. I use intervals for speed work. |
