Default Training advice?

Hey everyone I am looking at getting more and more into competitive cycling but I am pretty new. I would really like to get ready to do some Ironmans or other high endurance events. Definitely out of shape at the moment, looking to be ready to race in a year to year and a half if possible, and I can ride/ workout everyday at least for a little while.

Questions:
1. Do you have any sort of training you would recommend a newer rider to start with? (miles/day, certain types of intervals etc.)
2. Is there a certain way I should stack my diet to get in shape faster?
3. Any weights I should do on certain days?

Any training advice you could give would help lots!

Thanks everyone!!
-Spencer

A good healthy mixed diet is sufficient. Avoid lots of crappy processed foods - eat plenty of fruit and veg, carbs and some protein.

Not for Ironman or most aerobic endurance events.

Alex, you mind if I use your answer as a quote in another thread where I had difficulty conveying the same point?

(just kidding of course.....I'm done with that particular thread)

I don't mind people quoting me in context.

There are of course many reasons why one might do some resistance training, just not many that improve aerobic power, which is the primary consideration for such events. Certainly not strength work.

People sometimes talk about "core" work or other light resistance training. That's nice but you get enough core work to ride a bike, by, um, riding a bike.
