I was just wondering if you guys could help me pick one out. I didn't know how to measure my bike tires, but I looked on the back tire and it said 26x1.95, don't know if this is any help. Cycling isn't something I do for a hobby, do it to keep in shape, so that is why I don't want to spend a lot. Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me. :)

The old man told me he found the bike in the trash. I asked him if there was a name on the bike....he said "I think it says trek on it, you need some kind of different contraption to pump up the tires because the valve is too small for my pump". Well needless to say I came home yesterday with a 1980 Trek for $25. complete bike! The 531 frame is in almost perfect condition with one scratch 3mm long. Just the tires, tubes and brake hoods need replacing.
My question is: Many people hold these early Trek frames(Trek decal on the seat tube) in high regard, Is there a difference between the 80 531 frame and my 85 531 frame?
How obese the World is !
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in Europe and the US. Data for 2004 showed that nearly a quarter of men and women in England were obese. Another report warned that 25 per cent of all children in the UK could be clinically obese by 2050.
Thanks.

Hello,

I would like to find out if a 2004 Trek FX would be acceptable for a tour I'm planning this Spring.

This is the bike:
TrekBikes.com Bike Archive | 2004 7300 FX

I've used it heavily for commuting and day trips in the Puget Sound area, and find it comfortable. My concern is whether it will be serviceable for a longer tour.

My plan is to get from the state of Washington to Kansas, via crossing Washington, the Idaho panhandle, Montana, South Dakota, then down through Nebraska. This will involve some mountain passes. Although I'll be camping most of the time (i.e. carrying a small tent and sleeping bag), I've done a lot of backpacking and so am good about keeping gear to a minimum weight.

My main concern is whether the current gearage will get me over the passes. I'm willing to take it slow and get passed by road bikes, but don't want it to be a miserable disaster.

One bike shop told me I should get a new touring bike, while another told me with proper pre-trip maintenance and refit (tune up, replace chain/cassette, handlebar extenders, etc.) I should be fine.

Anyone have any thoughts on this bike for such a trip? I have a feeling it'll get me where I want to go, but if I really need a new machine, I'll get one.

Hello fellow cyclists, friends, and Ride of Silence Organizers.

With Thanksgiving in the USA just around the corner, and Canada having celebrated theirs last month, I'll be giving thanks this year to good health (kinda), that allows me to ride my bike, and to an organization like the Ride of Silence that allows me the opportunity to honor the memory of friends and family who no longer can join us while riding, while clearly raising awareness of cyclists rights on a global scale.

There's a number of things going on, and lot's of changes to the website you should know about.

1st: Our Web-master Tim P. has flipped the switch early. You can begin loading your 2010 Ride info, if you've got it firmed up. Let's get as many loaded as early as possible, for greater visibility to any rider looking for info about a RofS in their city/town/village in 2010. This also makes it easier for Tim come May, when he'll be very....very busy.

2nd: With permission from Mike Murgas in Texas, who penned the Ride of Silence Poem, there is a beautiful song entitled "Ride of Silence". It's sung by Singer & Composer (fellow cyclista from Espańa) Luis Gomez. The youtube video is quite powerful! Personally I'm honored that he chose a number of pictures from our 2009 RofS here in Grand Rapids MI, USA, showing our RofS/Share the Road T-shirts. Check it out here at, and let your cycling friends know:

YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.
3rd: I've created a Ride of Silence Cause on Facebook. Please consider joining and ask your friends and fellow cyclists to join also. Let's continue to get the word out. There's an emotional string of posts about an up and coming 18 year old cyclist, who sadly is no longer with us.

Causes on Facebook | Ride of Silence, Support it Worldwide

4th: We loaded a new 2010 International Ride of Silence Brochure, multilingual (8.5 X 14 - 1/4 fold) to the website. It can be edited for any location worldwide, we simply ask you to follow the guidelines listed. I've used this format for Michigan locations for a couple of years, Ride of Silence Founder Chris P. liked it and asked that I create a worldwide version. I've distributed the MI version to bike shops, cycling events, tours, health clubs, etc. I can make a few suggestions to help lower printing costs. You can find it here:

::Ride of Silence:: Organizer Resources

Lastly: Continue to check out the website, there's lots of new information, and Tim continues to update it regularly.

Hope you're all getting a few rides in, before the snow hits. (not for me, still recovering from the H1N1 flu :-(

Stay safe out on the road.
The story is that now I am in the vo2max camp :o. A couple of weeks of stale/stagnant power during threshold workouts and I decided to try some level 5 intervals. Still doing L4 too and L3. So the program is 2x/week L5, 2x/week L4, 2x/week hella L3 :):)

Ok ok, why not another vo2max thread :D

The story is that now I am in the vo2max camp :o. A couple of weeks of stale/stagnant power during threshold workouts and I decided to try some level 5 intervals. Still doing L4 too and L3. So the program is 2x/week L5, 2x/week L4, 2x/week hella L3 :):)

Did my 1st round of these level 5'ers this week. Used some of the tips from this post: http://www.cyclingforums.com/power-t...ationship.html (thanks for those!!).

My format was of 5 sets of 5 minutes at 1.14 * FTP with 5 minutes of rest between (soft pedal 50w). Pacing seems to be OK because the watt range. btwn all the work sets was only 3w (first set was hardest). NP = 95% of FT for this blockThen after the 5x5, 50 min block - I did 20 min .91 of FTP.

Can I ask a few quickie q's on these?

Better to shorten rest interval (from 5 min to 4 or 3 or 2) ? Or increase power? Thinking a shorter rest w/same power = more aerobic sources of energy. Longer rest prolly means more AWC usage. I want to train vo2max & pull up FT, not boost AWC. Guessing 5 min work + 2-4 min rest is more ideal, right?? I like the 5 minute work interval since I get an easy check of 5 minute pwr with these.

How high should NP be for 5x5 block? I read many posts in the archives that say it should be pretty close. How many rest periods do you include in the NP maths - 4 or 5?? User 'acoggan' in one thread said:

"you can also look at your normalized power for the entire set of intervals (work + rest periods combined) - if this is significantly less than your functional threshold power, then that suggests that you may be dogging it a bit". How close? 90%, 95%, 100%???

From the same thread acoggan commented on about these intervals: "In addition to looking at heart rate (which generally should be w/in 5-10 beats/min of maximum at the end of each interval), " There is no HR monitor among my training eq. Yea yea, I know, we are doing power training but those were user acoggans comments. So does anyone look at HR (or care????)during these intervals?
