“A slice of human powered history has recently emerged via a website set-up by
ocean-pedalling pioneer Yvon Le Caer who, in the 1980s, completed a remarkable
serie of voyages on his self-built pedalcraft.

A former successful racing cyclist, he had switched his efforts to pedal boats
and major crossings, as he said “not only to face new athletic and technical challenges,
but also to realize an old dream of mine and, by the same token, validate cycling on water.“

His first major crossing, in 1981, took him from Cat Cay in the Bahamas to Dania Beach
on the East coast of Florida, a 62-mile or 100 km journey.
Then, in 1985, he became the first cyclist to “pedal” the English Channel
from Cherbourg in Normandy, France, to Poole on the Dorset coast of England;
a 92-mile or 148 km journey riding AquaCycle, a pedalcraft of his own design.

His athletic career was cut short in 1986 by a hit-and-run driver,
but the new website offers a moving and impressive chronicle of the sea cycling

15th NZ PENNY FARTHING & VETERAN CYCLE CHAMPIONSHIPS
21ST & 22ND November 2009


The street circuits 20” race will in the afternoon and will consist of two laps of the Tyne and Harbour street circuit, for men and one lap for women.

Prize money for best riders in 20" events sponsored by the Safaribros [Oamaru Chapter] group are $600 men’s 2 lap race and healthy bar vouchers will be given out as well.
$200 cash women’s 1 lap Race and a $100 Criterion Bar Voucher .
Try and wear period gear for your 20” mount or either the 1880s. Given the century plus that elapsed it is hard to pin it down. The Organisers: the Oamaru Ordinary Bicycle Club like to keep it 19thC attire as much as is practicable. The 1970s were very interesting though.

This morning between 0730 and 1925 my mtb was stolen from a locked cage in a 'security' carpark in Kingwood.

I've lodged a police report, however I would like to put it out there in case anyone sees a bike like this going cheap.

It's an 18" 2006 Giant Reign 1 in dark brown / dark maroon, got a lizard skin and old tube on the swingarm and a (new) specialized sport computer on it (red). I have the serial and can provide it if anyone sees something sus.

Also stolen was a standard issue auscam Army pack, containing a dpcu uniform, army flying suit and a sleeping bag - both uniforms have the name 'THOMAS' above the right breast pocket.

They broke a chain and padlock to get into this cage (and took them with too).

I'd gladly pay a reward if anyone has any info leading to getting this back.

I'll be going round to all the local bike shops and 2nd hand dealers tomorrow.
