Hello fellow cyclists, friends, and Ride of Silence Organizers.

With Thanksgiving in the USA just around the corner, and Canada having celebrated theirs last month, I'll be giving thanks this year to good health (kinda), that allows me to ride my bike, and to an organization like the Ride of Silence that allows me the opportunity to honor the memory of friends and family who no longer can join us while riding, while clearly raising awareness of cyclists rights on a global scale.

There's a number of things going on, and lot's of changes to the website you should know about.

1st: Our Web-master Tim P. has flipped the switch early. You can begin loading your 2010 Ride info, if you've got it firmed up. Let's get as many loaded as early as possible, for greater visibility to any rider looking for info about a RofS in their city/town/village in 2010. This also makes it easier for Tim come May, when he'll be very....very busy.

2nd: With permission from Mike Murgas in Texas, who penned the Ride of Silence Poem, there is a beautiful song entitled "Ride of Silence". It's sung by Singer & Composer (fellow cyclista from Espańa) Luis Gomez. The youtube video is quite powerful! Personally I'm honored that he chose a number of pictures from our 2009 RofS here in Grand Rapids MI, USA, showing our RofS/Share the Road T-shirts. Check it out here at, and let your cycling friends know:

YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.
3rd: I've created a Ride of Silence Cause on Facebook. Please consider joining and ask your friends and fellow cyclists to join also. Let's continue to get the word out. There's an emotional string of posts about an up and coming 18 year old cyclist, who sadly is no longer with us.

Causes on Facebook | Ride of Silence, Support it Worldwide

4th: We loaded a new 2010 International Ride of Silence Brochure, multilingual (8.5 X 14 - 1/4 fold) to the website. It can be edited for any location worldwide, we simply ask you to follow the guidelines listed. I've used this format for Michigan locations for a couple of years, Ride of Silence Founder Chris P. liked it and asked that I create a worldwide version. I've distributed the MI version to bike shops, cycling events, tours, health clubs, etc. I can make a few suggestions to help lower printing costs. You can find it here:

::Ride of Silence:: Organizer Resources

Lastly: Continue to check out the website, there's lots of new information, and Tim continues to update it regularly.

Hope you're all getting a few rides in, before the snow hits. (not for me, still recovering from the H1N1 flu :-(

Stay safe out on the road.

This last one is a great read. For example, on his first mission in Nam, he misinterpreted a signal from his team leader as a command to slit an approaching VC's throat. So he did. And once he got the hang of it, he utilized this noise reduction technique on several other ambushes as well.

If you're interested in the experiences of the dedicated soldiers in special forces units such as the Rangers/LRRPs, Navy SEALs and MACV-SOG green berets, these books are among the very best.

I just joined the forum today. I'm relatively new to cycling. Well if you don't count the years before I could legally drive a car when I rode my bike anywhere and everywhere, just like the rest of us.

I got back into it when because of health issues I started to exercise and watch my diet. One of the exercises was to ride a stationary bike in the gym. I realized that riding outside would probably be less boring so I bought an inexpensive MTB and began experiencing the joys of a sore butt and the great outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. That was about 2 years ago. This year about June I got tired of falling behind some of my younger riding friends on their road bikes and bought a proper road bike. So now at the age of 67, some of my friends, that are 25 years my junior, struggle to keep up with me. It's great. I love it. My goal for next year is to do the 2 day STP ride from Seattle to Portland in July. So far, my longest ride has been 75 relatively hilly miles. I and one of my friends did it in 5 hours and 5 minutes so I think I'm on track to achieve my goal. About 10,000 people do this ride and some, about 2000 of them, do it in one day. The rest, including myself do it in two 100 mile days.

So I'm anxious to learn more about this sport and look forward to sharing ideas.

Now for my first question: On this forum, what's the purpose of "Friends and Contact"? How is it used? What's the advantage? I found that within minutes of becoming a registered member, I got a message that someone in the UK wanted to "be my friend". Now I'm not a suspicious person by nature. But, I've just signed up and someone I don't know now wants to "be my friend". That's a little strange, unless I'm missing something. I certainly don't want to snub anyone, and maybe it just that I don't know what being a friend on this site is all about.

Over the years riding the rural roads of East Tennessee I have developed haibts whether good or bad they are part of me now.

1st short climb: Pedal easy I am warming up.

1st downhill: Coast, trying to conserve energy for later.

Long flat: Pick it up a bit.

1st animal encounter: Slow down gear up and then pedal like hell past his lair.

Redneck in pickup: Pedal fast around curve cause he will pass you in the blind spot and cut you off.

Blue hair in Buick: Take your time, she will only pass if she has 3 weeks worth on straightaway to do in.

I hear Banjo music: Take a deep breath and pedal like hell.

Passing hot chicks running: Gear up and pump hard to look cool. ( I am not sure why)

Approaching another cyclist: (Either from behind or heading the opposite way) Hammer down and try to look like a pro. ( Again, not sure why)

Getting past by a faster cyclist: Slow down and fumble with your front derauiller as if you are having mechanical problems.

I took about a 10 year break from bicycles, and forgot how much fun it was. I purchased a TREK 2300 at a community yard sale from a guy who got bored of riding. I have had it for about 3 months, but haven't been on it a ton becuase I haven't had time. Now... I do! I also enjoy crossfit (one of the reasons I became a Clydedale), and would love to do sprint triathalons in the future. I really need to get some swimming in! LOL! I look forward to "chatting" with ya'll! Hope to hear from you soon.
