Default Low carb diet fad dying out

It's all over the newswires, seems the fad is just about over, according to studies.

As a scientist and personal trainer I was always concerned about the ultra low carb diets that everyone was on this year so I'm sort of glad they are gone.

On the other hand, by accident I ended up on a "reduced carb" diet a few months ago when I found out I was wheat intolerant and had to stop eating bread (I love eating bread).

The result was that I dropped a few kilos very quickly, which shows perhaps that a lower carb diet might help some people lose fat.

I'm still not a fan of atkins though!!

You don't need to give up bread entirely. I have a friend who is also wheat-intolerant, she eats spelt bread, or Ezekiel 4:9 bread...both available from almost any health food store.

I am sure you will find that reduced carbohydrate diets stay around for a long time. Once they get into the New England Journal of Medicine and are shown to be:
(1) At least equivalent, if not a little better in terms of weight loss
(2) Better lipid profile
- when compared to low fat diet, they are likely to hang around.

Sample size of your study = 1.
And you know there is possibly a higher mortality from such a low cholesterol...

Not according to my doctor. He said my chol is perfect, both the HDL and LDL as well as the total chol.

As one of Dr. Atkins patients, let me just say that you've all misunderstood what he was teaching. You've picked up too much of the Media Blitz and not enough of his theories.

Everyone has different carbo needs. What he was trying to establish was a lifestyle that kept carbs in balance to those needs. The media made it the "low" carb diet fad and everyone eventually jumped on the bandwagon, but only after Dr. Atkins' death, without understanding the total picture. He would never have allowed this BS crass commercialism that's going on now.

Personal body balance, individual carb needs as measured by ketones in the urine. If you exercise more, you naturally take in more carbs because your body needs them. As you slow down the excercise you lower your carbs as your test strips dictate.

Too many people look at phase one of the program and assume that's the whole diet.

Meek One is an unknown quantity at this point

Low carb diets are good for shedding some pounds, but overall aren't very healthy. Bodybuilders cutting up for contest have used this for years e.g. Schwarzenegger and Ferrigno and Zane used these back in the early 70's and I am sure many did years before this. Americans are just suckers for whatever the latest 'new' study is and then go overboard without reading the study in its entirety. Don't get me going on the Lemmings....
