Default Soft Drinks

Hey everyone,

We have all heard that drinking too much sugar (especially in the form of soft drinks) is not healthy, and a quick way to gain weight. My question is, is diet cola any better for us?

I am of course speaking in moderation here (ie. one can of diet cola a day). I am looking at the nutritional info and the ingredients on the side of a can of Diet Coke, and it doesn't appear that there is that much in one can. However, does the carbonation or aspartame have a negative impact on health, weight, performance, etc? Or is there no negative impact from diet colas? I know the jury is still out on the effects of caffeine for performance, I find it helps for short rides, but again in moderation.

Thanks a lot.

Diet cola is the devil's drink. Stick to beer.

Actually, there is some evidence that cola drinks contribute to losses in bone density. I don't know the science, but that is a concern for cyclists who don't lift weights, or run etc... I imagine that there is some data available if you're concerned. Also, there is a lot of info on the side effects of artificial sweeteners.

Soft Drinks contain a lot of phosphorus. Within our blood, we try to keep a 2:1 ratio of Ca2+ to P+. Therefore, take in excessive amounts of P+, and you need to balance it out and the bones are an easy way to get more Ca2+.

Diet soft-drinks-both aspartame and spenda are nasty and can lead to illness. I am fortunate to have a good buddy who is a food and flavor chemist, and in his words and his colleagues, stay away from that stuff!! I don't know where you are writing from, but in the U.S., the FDA allows the stuff on the market because the company's making it line their pockets.

My personal belief is that artificial sweeteners cause cancer (but what doesn't these days?) and that unless you're diabetic to stay away.
