Default Protein questions

I was thinking about buying some protein supplements - but I was wondering what kind I should buy - Whey, soy or Egg?
I know the most common is whey protein, and I remember reading something about soy protein being released/absorbed at a slower rate - I dont know much about the Egg protein -
Which is better for cycling?

Hi , whey protien is digested better by the body and is just generaly a better quality protien. Egg protien is really were protien supplements began many years ago so it has been evolved with more effective products such as whey, soya. Soya is also quite good if you have digestion problems such as an intolerance. Some protiens even come 'half digested' (forgot the actuel name). The idea is that they get into the sytem quicker. I would personaly mix my protien either with water or soya milk. I try to avoid dairy. But remeber that a good serving of soya on its own has nearly the same amount of nutrients as most protiens, that is one of the reasons why you can see it at the table of most pro teams when racing. Plus it is low in fat. Look out for the EAS, or maximuscle products these are quite pure without too much suger added. Any protien that tastes good has flavour and flavour equels sugar for taste. Rubbish that you dont want. So check the label. I once mixed a protien and left it for an hour or so, when I went to drink it there was about a quarter of an inch of sugar that had resettled at the bottom. I ditched it. I think Nutrisport do a great one called 'winter formula'(not just for winter though) a few of the elites I race with are using it, and swear by it. I am gonna splash out and get some. I was reading a bit about protein on bodybuilding.com and it seems I should only go for Whey Isolate and not Whey concentrate...
Whey Isolate seem very expensive

Benefiber mixes well with no detectable grittiness to protein powders and may keep you from busting a hernia straining.

Whey isolate is definitely the way to go. And yes, it can be expensive. Fortunately, there's this product: http://bodybuilding.com/store/dym/elite.html

This protein tastes awesome and as you can see, has very little sugar. This is quite possibly the finest protein you can find. If you don't buy this, make sure that whatever protein you buy has less than 10mg of cholesterol; only TRUE isolute has less than 10mg--fact.

Whey is best for immediate absorption. That's its main benefit. Other proteins serves different purposes, however, whey is all you need for endurance exercises. Especially if you're taking a high quality protein such as the one above.

BTW: I like the chocolate mint flavor. It really rocks!

Presuming you eat a normal mixed diet (including vegetarian), and don't eat a bizarre diet (e.g., you just drink energy drinks), and aren't in a heavy weight loss phase, then it's highly unlikely that you'd need supplemental protein. Unless you like wasting money.

I'm 6"3 and 171LBS - I'm trying to reach just under 160LBS (if that's even possible) - I'm having troulbe taking in 1.5gr protein pr kg body weight.

I've no idea whether your weight loss is doable (you'd really need to know what your body fat % is). However, as i pointed out above if you're in a heavy weight loss phase you may not be able to reach protein requirements, but other than that it's pretty easy to consume 1.5g/kg BM/day (unless you a very unusual diet - e.g. you're a fruitarian).

FWIW, as a strict vegetarian i find it reasonably easy to consume ~ 2g/kg BM/day.

6'3" and 171lbs is quite lean. Either way, if your goal is to lose another 11 pounds, I recommend staying away from the protein shakes. Drinks tons of water.
