this is another knee issue, but i haven't come across a similar thread yet in the search. i bought a new bike around 2 months ago and hadn't experienced any real problems unitl about 4 days ago. i had originally set the saddle further back than on the older bike (same top tube length for both frames) but recently (last week) moved it forward to my old position. since then, i have come across two problems... 1. left lateral knee pain (outside) 2. right shoulder/uper back pain (where the shoulder blade protrudes) ive done some browsing, and i saw that my TOES IN riding style could cause the knee pain. however, i have knees that are naturally indented (for lack of the proper term) and i am slightly pigeon-toed. my cleats are currently in the widest possible setting and are speedplay x2s so there is a fair bit of float. i just bought an ACE compression sleeve to see if it helps, but i dont know if that will hold while riding. as far as the shoulder goes, i think i saw that when the saddle is moved forward, the upper body is required to support more weight than necessary for a back-trending position. so, if i move the saddle back i will be less efficient than i am now, but i may save my shoulder, and i have know idea what it would do to my knee. i didn't think that fore/aft position affected knees all that much. any suggestions would be welcome and appreciated. |

Move your seat back to its old position. Why do you think the new position is more efficient BTW? If it is causing you pain (which it appears to be doing) then that suggests your joints are not tracking in their correct alignment and the new position is therefore less efficient. |

in the old position, which was new when i got the new bike, im too far back to have a smooth pedal stroke when riding in the drops. the 6 o'clock pedal position is too stretched out and i lose most of my power there on every revolution. the more forward position is what i had before the new bike, and allows for a smooth pedal stroke and better spinning on flats although, as expected, i can grind up an ascent better in the back position. |
